Photo of the Day (10.24.09)

Talk about a gorgeous sunset! I must have said this before, but I’ll say it again: I love Hawaii. I’m almost positive this photo’s been enhanced, but I have to say sunsets in Hawaii actually look like this all the time. Really.

Today’s photo comes to use from arbpdx1, who has a really great photostream on Flickr, complete with family and travel photos. If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!

There’s something awfully distinct about the Spanish colonial architecture — especially walls that enclose cities all over Latin America and the Caribbean. I love the composition of this photo in particular, from the green foreground to the colonial wall that looks out to a stunning sky and what must be the open sea.

Today’s Photo of the Day was taken yesterday in Puerto Rico and comes to us from robertrex365, who just happened to work as a Obama campaign photographer. No wonder this photo is such a stunner!

Nothing compares to the sunsets in Asia. At dusk every day you could expect to find me on a patio outside (preferably by the Mekong River), sipping on a local beer, and snapping photo after photo of the red glowing sun. The great thing about this photo is it appears to be naturally sepia-toned — a perfect blend of old with new.

Today’s Photo of the Day comes to us from flicts, who has traveled to such places as Vietnam, Ireland, Kiev, and Tibet. If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!

Some events remain just as powerful and raw years later, and that is what 9/11 is to most Americans. Although I didn’t lose anyone that day, many of my friends did, and what remains for them even eight years later is a deep sense of emptiness that will always be there. I passed through Ground Zero yesterday and paid my respect to the thousands of lives lost that day. Wherever we are in the world, I hope we all take a moment if we haven’t already to remember 9/11 and remind ourselves just how precious life is.

Photo of the Day (9-9-09)

I am intrigued by this shot for a few reasons. The subject’s movement is perfectly captured in the frame. One inch more in either direction and the visual interest would be lost. Plus there’s the action. This is a person going somewhere with a purpose in mind. Look at those boots and the outfit. Great accessories for a walk through a city or for a party–or work in a chic clothing store. That the subject is anonymous adds to the allure. The photographer also seems hidden. What I do know is that this was taken by cmvoelkel in New York City at a crosswalk and is aptly tagged, “living vicariously nyc.”

If you are living vicariously somewhere and have shots to share, send them our way at Gadling’s Flickr photo pool. One or more may be chosen as a Photo of the Day.
