Photo of the Day (8.22.09)

There´s something both totally fitting yet out of place in this photo. The London Tower Bridge, as I see it, is one of the most famous bridges in the world because of its age and history. While the bridge that stands over the River Thames today was built in the 19681894, I like to imagine it as a throwback to the days of old. And while the postmodern streams of red and purple lights add nice contrast to this image, it seems like London (just like any other place) has to find that nice blend between old and new.

Needless to say, this photo taken by jrodmanjr is quite stunning. The blur of pedestrians and the streaks of light make for a perfect image of the today´s London.

When I think of the word “silhouette” I think of that old 50’s song about a guy watching a couple kissing in the silhouette of a window shade. There’s something special about silhouettes that make me want to sigh. This particular photograph also makes me smile. You can tell a lot from the hats the men here are wearing and the exchange is a friendly one between two (or maybe three) cultures.

Based on the title of this photo, “Primera Venta” (“First Sale”), our photographer of the day, penton42, captured a pretty sweet moment in rural Guatemala.

At first glance, this cliff looks precarious and tall, but when you look even more closely, you can see just how precarious the dwellings that sit atop it truly are. While I’ve always wondered what it would be like to live atop a cliff, I don’t think I’d ever be so daring as to do it.

This shot was taken on the lovely island of Corsica in France by mikegoldstein, whose photographs span nearly half the globe — from southeast Asia to the warm beaches of Europe. I’m in awe of the contrast between light and dark and the medium tones of the water that balance this photo so perfectly.

It’s always fun to play with objects and light, as Gadling’s faithful photographer austin fain shows us here. The light glowing from behind this cross makes the image even more powerful, don’t you think?

If you’re traveling to Easter Island, then your visit is surely incomplete if you aren’t able to see the Moai statues with your own two eyes. These statues can be found along the coastal periphery of this special island, which is nestled conveniently between the nations of Tahiti and Chile. You can only get to the island through one of these two places too — or by boat. But what a special place and what a sight this land and these statues must be.

Did I mention the surfing here is off the chain too? Sounds like an amazingly remote paradise to me!
