Photo of the Day (6.16.09)

Today’s Photo of the Day is relevant for several reasons. The shot of the tarmac on the way to Paris was taken by Kent Wien, our resident pilot who is actually currently on layover in the middle of a BOS-CDG-BOS turn.

This week is also the week of the 45th Paris Air Show, the massive biannual event that brings thousands of suppliers, manufacturers and press to Le Bourget for updates on all of the new technology. It’s the biggest air show in the world, and both Kent and Grant will running around collecting data for Gadling. Stay tuned later this week for updates from the show.

Oh, and if you’ve got any cool photos that you’d like to share with the world, add them to the Gadling Pool on Flickr and it might be chosen as our Photo of the Day. Make sure you save them under Creative Commons though, otherwise we can’t use them!

Take one guess where this photo was shot. Even if you’ve never been there, it’s not too difficult to tell. If you said America, you’re really warm. If you were even more accurate and said BOSTON, you’re right on the money! Maybe the towering blue Hancock building gave it away? Or was it the dark clouds that somehow loom over the city every fall and spring?

Though this photo, which comes to us in high definition from Patrick Powers, doesn’t show it, Beantown is celebrating the end of spring and the beginning of summer. And you know what that means: baseball, the Red Sox, Fenway — and lots of ’em! I was just there last weekend, and while the weather looked like this when I arrived, it was a bright and hot 75 degrees when I left. Ah…. Boston…

Add one more thing to my growing list of things to do before I die: be a contestant on the Cash Cab. What could be more quintessentially New York than an endless row of New York taxi cabs? This photo, brought to us by ultraclay, not only captures the perfectly organized chaos that is New York City street life, but he brings these yellow cabs lined up in a row into vibrant life.

Those of you like myself who are dying to get on the Cash Cab might utilize these strategies when hailing a taxi in the hopes of finding the show’s host, Ben Bailey, sitting behind the wheel:

  • Stick to midtown — more specifically, Columbus Circle: Only rarely does the Cash Cab pick up passengers in uptown or downtown.
  • Look like a tourist: Most Cash Cab contestants are out of towners.
  • Flag a van: 90% of New York cabs are sedans, and the Cash Cab is a van.
  • Rub your rabbit’s foot: Really, flagging the Cash Cab just takes a lot of luck.

Photo of the Day (5.23.09)

Just a quick glance at this photo from styggiti, which was taken just two months ago in March 2009, shows that the Big Island’s volcano — the most active in the world today — is alive and well. My last visit to the magical Volcano National Park was during a full moon, and the a’a (fresh, smooth, hard lava rock) glimmered in the moonlight so white that I felt like I was walking on water.

This stunning photo captures the natural wonder of Hawaii’s active volcano. You can touch the warm rock and snap photos of it, but you mustn’t take even a single stone home with you. Pele, Hawaii’s fire goddess, has a reputation of making your life miserable if you do, and there are countless stories of visitors returning stolen lava rocks to Volcano.

What I wouldn’t give to be on a beach right now, watching seagulls drift around and not wearing pants. jrodmanjr actually took this shot on San Francisco (hence the fog) where the beaches may be less tropical but where the scenery is just as gorgeous. The perfect combination of light, shadows and high shutter speed in this photo add to its magnificence. Nice pic, jrodmanjr.
