People like to gripe about airplane food. It’s been fodder for comedians (not all of them funny) for years. People complain about how it tastes. They bitch about it being too hot or too cold. It’s chewy. It’s difficult to cut with plastic cutlery. And, now, it just plain costs too much since airlines have stopped serving free meals. Oddly, though, I love airplane food. I enjoy how compartmentalized it is. How I’m eating a full meal nearly six miles above the surface of the Earth. How I get to put a huge chunk of cheese on one tiny cracker. That’s why I love this picture by Flickr user andreakw. There’s no judgment here. No hacky jokes about airplane food. Just a simple meal served six miles above the surface of the Earth. And, perhaps alarmingly, no chunks of cheese.

Why not share your favorite memories of airplane meals in the comments below?

Ever wonder what the world looks like from atop a camel? Flickr user Arun George83 found out on a recent trip to the Khuri Sand Dunes.

“This photo is taken from Khuri sand dunes in Thar desert near jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India. Some tourists are seen traveling on top of camels and enjoying sunset. I was on top a camel when I took this photo.”

Quite cool (and from it looks of it, very hot) to see the desert in the distance the way your ride does.

June has finally arrived, which can only mean one thing – the World Cup is just less than two weeks away! When traveling abroad, it’s easy to see that football really is the most widely played sport on Earth; scenes like this one are a familiar occurrence.

This photo was taken by Flickr user pirano, on the steps of the beautiful Sacré Cœur in Montemartre, Paris. I love the beautifully balanced black & white tones and unique perspective that offsets the distinct backdrop of Parisian buildings with photo’s subject.

I’m not one to spend my tourist dollars on street performers and schlock like grains of rice with my name printed on them. But I’ve always kind of been amused by the street artists who draw portraits of eager travelers looking for a customized souvenir to take home. I was always partial to caricatures. Maybe it’s because the genre really seemed to peak in the 1980s (which would explain why 88% of all caricatures involve rollerblading or extraneous headbands). Flickr user Flavio@Flickr perfectly captured the moment when this artist imperfectly captured this man’s image.

Some jobs are just a little harder than others, but hey – if your job is selling trinkets on a beach, what could be bad? Ok, pushing the trinkets cart probably isn’t the highlight of your day, but this photo certainly is! Taken by andreakw in Cuba, this photo is a great reminder of the various ways people make a living, even those in remote islands coveted by U.S. tourists.

Come on, you know you want a seashell necklace…
