Photo of the Day (01.30.10)

I don’t want to know what’s going on in this photo by Flickr user hannah.r.freedman. And I certainly don’t want to know what lessons this girl is taking away from her inspection of a llama’s central business district. I just hope that she owns that animal. Because I was always taught not to look a gift llama in the butt.

Did you practice llama proctology when you were in Otavalo, Ecuador? Did you take any pictures of it? Or, better yet, have any travel photos that don’t involve you and llama having a reverse staring contest? Submit your images to Gadling’s Flickr group right now and we might use it for a future Photo of the Day.

New Englanders are all too familiar with this scene – the white house filled with history and an American flag waving proudly in the front yard, saluting the people of the town it calls home. But what’s great about New England is its ability to merge old with new, as seen in this photo by malaycobra. The appropriately titled “Technology Meets History” shows a crane erecting a wind turbine in the background of one of New England’s historical homes.

Pictures of animals are always a crowd pleaser. But while everyone oohs and ahhs over the cuddly creatures, the story of what is actually happening is often lost. This picture, by Flickr user Jenna Schnuer (who is also one of the talented writers at the fantastic Flyover America blog), allows us to get a sense of what these penguins were thinking that day in Cape Town, South Africa. From what I can tell, the female penguin standing in the middle is married to the penguin on the right. Her husband has been coming home late recently and often smells like another penguin. Today, she found another female’s feathers in his beak. He just told her that it’s not what it looks like but, as you can tell, she’s not buying it. She’s packed her things to stay with her mother (the penguin on the left).

The animal kingdom is truly fascinating.

You just never know what you’ll see in New York City. This picture, taken by ncarling, is a great shot of old-meets-new as the cabs whiz by the steeds in the street. Looks like it was a slow day in the city, but great job ncarling for grabbing the shot before being trampled by various forms of transportation.

If you’ve got some great travel shots you’d love to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day.

No, this isn’t a photo that a young Don Quixote brought to school for show and tell. It’s a bucolic scene on Russia’s Kizhi island captured by Flickr user kellinasf. While I wouldn’t want to be the gentleman charged with manning this windmill (are windmills manned?), I’d love to spend an afternoon laying in that field, staring at the clouds and doodling in a journal.

Kizhi is known for its wooden churches, chapels and houses. The structures are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site which draws thousands of tourists every year. But, for my money, a day in this meadow listening to the wind rustle the leaves of that tree and the creaking of the wooden windmill would be the only way I’d want to enjoy a visit to Kizhi. Call me simple, but that’s all I would need. Well, if someone packed me an eight-foot party sub for the afternoon, I wouldn’t complain about that either.
