Photo of the Day (10.7.08)

I happen to be in Pittsburgh this warm fall Tuesday, sitting in a convention center looking out at the mountains around the Pennsylvanian city. Even since I came to visit my friend Al in Shady Side I’ve been fond of Pittsburgh, and now that I’m back five years later I still feel the same warm affection for the city. Or maybe that’ just the Yuengling I keep drinking.

Flickr user(s) BrettandMariLynn took this tilt shift photo (don’t you love them?) of a church nearby here.

Vietnamese beaches, while not known as the best in the world, are still top notch. In the little time that I spent in South Vietnam, a small portion was on a beach in Mui Ne, just east of Saigon and home to a resident population of windsurfers. To me, the soft white sand, pleasant staff and uncrowded beaches make it preferrable to Cancun any day. Flickr user ourmanwhere shot it on the beach of Phu Quoc.

I’ve been tossing around the idea of a trip to New Zealand for roughly twenty years now, but recently the urge has gotten much stronger. Perhaps it’s because I’m now living with a couple of Kiwi semi-professional rugby players, or maybe it’s because I’ve never met an unfriendly person from New Zealand — whatever it is, I’m going to have to start putting a trip together. And with images like this around the country, how could you resist?

Flickr user Jitsu shot this photo on the South Island of NZ between Te Anau and Milford Sound, right behind some ten zillion sheep.

Istanbul’s Blue Mosque — one of my favorite places in the world in one of my favorite cities in the world. Walking into The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is one of those jaw dropping experiences that you remember for the rest of your life, its vaulted ceilings and Ottoman and Christian influences gently meeting far above the silent crowd. Today’s photo of the day comes from smallscreen, who does an excellent job capturing the detail of the central and satellite domes. A truly exceptional shot.

So this is what Cuban beaches look like. Today’s photo of the day comes from localsurfer, who very well captures the image of a place that I want to be right now — at a beach, playing in the surf, away from the humidity of the upper Midwest. Nice shot, localsurfer. Maybe some day I’ll be able to take one like this myself.
