Paris is a visually arresting city no matter where you look, whether it’s the city’s ornate architecture, fashionable residents or jaw-dropping art museums. Take this photo by Flickr user Cosmic Smudge, who captured this intriguing Paris scene after a rainstorm, as evidence. I love the mysterious umbrella holder, whose face remains unseen, complemented by splashes of bright red and flashes of gold from the buildings behind.

Photo of the Day: Overcast Saigon

Anyone that’s ever visited Southeast Asia knows about the region’s frequent rainstorms. Particularly during monsoon season, the heavens often open up without warning on travelers, forcing you to run for cover to avoid getting soaked. Today’s photo, brought to us by Flickr user _jeryc garcia_, is an all-too-familiar visual reminder of these Southeast Asian monsoons. Taken in Saigon, it looks as if our photographer is taking refuge from one of these typical if unexpected showers. The dark, monochrome sky is punctuated by colorful turquoise and green buildings and a luminous sliver sun off on the horizon. The grid-like pattern of the windows lends an additional visual intrigue.

If you’ve never experienced a thunderstorm as it rolls across the Great Plains, you’re missing out. During the shimmering-hot days of summer, you can hear and see these monsters coming from far away. Thunder rumbles ominously. Dark storm clouds rise to immense heights. The branches of trees flutter about in the intensifying breeze. It’s truly one of the nature’s greatest spectacles – the power, beauty and sound of these huge storms is a force to be reckoned with. That’s why Flickr user SenzEnina’s capture of one of these amazing summer storms caught my eye today. The dark wavy storm clouds and tiny farm suggest a scene with an interesting dramatic tension, right before the thunderstorm reaches the observer.
