Photo Of The Day: The Ganges River At Dawn

Sometimes, the most poignant travel imagery is captured before the destination has even woken up. Take, for instance, today’s Photo of the Day, taken by Flickr user Calvin Lee on the banks of the Ganges River in Varanasi, India. Later in the day, the river will be filled with pilgrims engaging in religious rituals, tourists taking photos of them and the hustlers that inevitably follow the tourists. But in this image, taken at dawn, you can practically hear the silence.

Photo Of The Day: Venus And Jupiter At Sunset

This week, millions looked to the sky at sunset (or sunrise, depending on your location) to see the Transit of Venus. This now once-in-a-lifetime event – the last time Venus was visible crossing the sun’s path was 2004 – won’t happen again until 2117. Today’s Photo of the Day is from a more frequent event: sunset. Taken by Flickr user woofboy111 in Deltona, Florida, in November 2008, the planets Venus and Jupiter appear as specks over the setting sun. Even if you missed Venus’ voyage this week, you can still see several other planets visible after dusk this month.

We’d love to see your favorite sky photos in the Gadling Flickr pool to be featured as a future Photo of the Day.

Photo Of The Day: Sunrise At Monument Valley

Utah’s Monument Valley is home to some of the most iconic rock formations on earth, formations that have played host to numerous nature lovers, photographers and filmmakers who come to soak in their visual beauty. Today’s photo, taken by Flickr user oilfighter, offers us a magnificent and unique look at these world-famous geological oddities. Taken at sunrise, the two lone rock pinnacles lie in shadow, accentuated by the warm yellows and smoky oranges that herald the coming of a new day.

Taken any great sunrise photos during your travels? Why not share them on our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

Photo of the Day: Western skies

There’s something indescribably calming about looking over a body of water at sunrise. Flickr user James Wheeler captures this feeling in today’s Photo of the Day, taken at 6 a.m. from an old pier in the West Point Grey district of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The image’s quality is partially thanks to Wheeler’s Nikon D5000, but the scenery doesn’t hurt either.

Photo of the Day (05.17.10)

The best way to see a new place is to walk around. Wake up early, hit the streets and just wander. Through markets, up hills to scenic lookouts and through tiny neighborhoods that allow you to really see how people live. But all of that shopping, wandering, strolling and sightseeing can really wreak havoc on your feet. Sometimes you just need to sit your ass down, stay still for a while and let everyone else do the walking while you simply watch. That’s why, when you finally see a bench, it’s like a mirage in the desert. This photo by Flickr user flicts makes me so happy. There’s nothing like a well-placed bench after a day of being dragged around to shops, ruins and unforgiving cobblestone streets. Except for maybe a well-timed churro.

Seen any good spots to pop a squat? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.
