Photo of the Day (7.20.10)

Think you can’t capture beautiful images with a mobile phone? Au contraire. This tranquil sunset shot uploaded by Flickr user Gus NYC was taken with an Apple iPhone in the waters of Saint Martin. The range of color, the light, & the serene water make me want to go explore the Caribbean right now.

Saint Martin is an island in the northeast Caribbean, currently divided 60/40 between the French & the Dutch. However, on October 10th of this year, the Dutch side of Saint Martin will become a self-governing country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands; much like Aruba is today.

Today’s Photo of the Day comes out of Jasper, Alabama from Flickr user bamassippi. Taken under the stadium lights of a High School football field, I feel that this photo captures a quintessential American summer evening – and with Memorial Day right around the corner, there will hopefully be many of these summer sunsets up ahead.

Jasper is part of Walker County, which once ranked among the world’s leading producers of coal. Settled in 1815, it was named in honor of Sergeant William Jasper, a Red Stick War hero.

Strolling along the shore at sunset can be magical. But is it better to be alone so that you can enjoy some quiet introspection or with someone so that the setting can help set a mood that you hope to sustain back at your house with some wine and a Barry White CD? Are sunsets best enjoyed in solitude or with company? There are merits to both. On the one hand, enjoying nature’s beauty alone allows you to reflect on the day’s events, their context in your life and what promise the following day may hold. On the other, sharing such a moment with a loved one allows you to get lost together and feel as if the rest of the world has ceased to exist. I wonder if Flickr user Andy Bokanev was with anyone when he captured this stunning image at Puget Sound. I wonder if he likes Barry White.

Is this a photo of a “magic” forest? Because it looks like something straight out of another world: slanting rays of light, ominous trees and a multi-colored starburst of sun. It’s remarkably similar to this other sunlight photo from earlier this month. Congrats to Flickr user kanelstrand for capturing this otherworldly forest shot during her travels to Norway.

Today’s Photo of the Day is a beautiful shot captured by photographer jtwalter. I love everything about this shot; the lighting, the setting and the pure exhilaration captured in this classic childhood moment. jtwalter has a series of beautiful shots from across America on his website that really capture the ‘American spirit’ and are worth checking out.

The shot was taken in the Cornhusker State – Nebraska – evidence that you don’t need to travel very far to take great travel photography. If you have some shots you’d like to share with us, send them in at our Gadling Flickr Pool!
