Travel Back Thursday: Halloween In The 1950s

Our friends at AOL Travel published an article today, covering the Best Halloween Neighborhoods in America. These communities and neighborhoods have some long-standing traditions that they honor in order to keep things festive — and perhaps a bit spooky. This 1952 throwback shows a young family, preparing to go out that evening in their Central City, Colorado neighborhood.

What did your community do for Halloween when you were young?

Travel Back Thursday: Washington, D.C. Metro On Opening Day

I don’t know about you, but Thursday afternoons are when my weekend plans start to take shape. And tomorrow, after my laptop is shut down and I exchange my button-down for a t-shirt, I’ll be heading in to D.C. for the evening by way of the Metro, alongside countless others. The same scenario will undoubtedly play out in every other major city with a subway-esque train system.

The Washington Metro opened its doors in March of 1976. Today’s photo shows people waiting in line at the Rhode Island Avenue station for a free Metro ride on opening day, March 27. In the near future, Northern Virginia residents will experience another “opening day line” as Metro opens the first phase of the Silver Line route.

Travel Back Thursday: USAir, Circa 1992

Thursdays mark a new rendition of our Photo of the Day on Gadling. We’ll be traveling back in time to feature interesting memories of years past. Today, we go back about 20 years (can you believe 1992 was so long ago?) with this photo of a USAir jet being loaded with meals for to-be-boarded passengers. Photographer Hunter Desportes reminisces, “Ah, the good old days of free food on domestic flights.”

When was the last time you were served a meal on board?
