Video: South Dakota winter time-lapse

I’ve been hypnotized by many a nature time-lapse video this year, but this film capturing South Dakota winter is one of my new favorites. Shot back in February, the artist behind the piece says that most nights were subzero with a -25F wind chill. Using the Dynamic Perception Stage Zero dolly and the Milapse mount on most shots, Randy Halverson pushed some limits on exactly what kind of weather conditions this type of equipment can’t withstand.

Video of the day: The Mountain, El Teide, Spain

This video by Terje Sorgjerd, called “The Mountain”, came into my Tumblr feed yesterday. I’ve watched it several times since that first breathtaking viewing and I’m still in awe. This time lapse video was filmed on El Teide–Spain‘s highest mountain. The mountain is reportedly one of the best places in the world to view the stars and the Teide Observatories call the mountain home.

The video was shot between April 4th-11th, 2011. Sorgjerd is a landscape photographer from Norway and, according the video’s Vimeo description, didn’t spend much time sleeping during this week-long shoot. With stunning views of the stars, the trees, and even a sandstorm that rolled through during the shoot, watching this video is an easy way to brighten your day in just a few minutes.

A time lapse video journey through Japan

I have fond memories of my visit to Japan two years ago. From the mind-boggling delights of Tokyo to the placid preserves of Kyoto and the no-holds-barred fun fest of Osaka, it’s a country that provided some of my greatest travel moments. That’s why the video above, created by Vimeo user Brad Kremer, is bringing back strong memories for me today. Brad has made use a photographic technique called time lapse, allowing every day events to happen at breakneck speed.

Watch as pedestrians scurry through the subway system like ants, clouds swirl over mountainsides and car headlights zip to and fro like tiny lasers. It’s a totally new perspective on one of my favorite places. Not only is Kremer’s cinematography beautiful, it’s shot in lush HD format. Have a busy day ahead of you this morning? Today’s video of the week is a time lapse of a flight from Dallas to New York on an MD-80 from Andrew Wonder. Andrew created it using an iPhone and the $3 iTimeLapsePro application. You may have to be discreet about it, and you’ll definitely want the phone in airplane mode, but the results are well worth the effort.

San Francisco is a particularly photogenic city, between the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the city’s iconic cable cars. But these “same old” San Francisco shots get old after awhile – that’s why I’m loving today’s image from Flickr user evilninjam0nky, who captured this unique nighttime street scene. A frenzy of activity catches your eye in the foreground, as a blur of pedestrians and traffic scurries back and forth. It’s contrasted perfectly by a block of stoic old Victorian brownstones, which anchor the background.
