Gadling’s Friday Travel Tunes – Episode 4

A good music playlist, like a good trip, changes pace from along the way. The initial frenetic energy generated by the anticipation and adrenaline that initiates a trip is followed by a calming lull as you catch your breath and begin to settle into your new surroundings. As your trip meanders in unexpected directions, your music should accompany you like a good friend.

At the end of your trip, as you board your flight home or drive those final miles of a road trip, you simply need the sweet sounds of Lionel Richie to let you know that you’ve survived.

Gadling’s Friday Travel Tunes – Episode 3

Our Friday Travel Tunes series continues this week with nine songs that’ll help make even the longest bus or plane ride feel, well, not quite so long. This playlist (the perfect cure for your “Landlocked Blues”) features Swedish songwriters Jens Lekman and Kristoffer Ragnstam, the UK band Florence and the Machine, and several American acts like Bright Eyes, The Decemberists, and the Bon Savants.

Gadling’s Friday Travel Tunes – Episode 2

I’m told that my taste in music skews towards the minimalist side — a matter that has been a point of contention in more than a few relationships in my life. Quieter tunes, however, can still serve a road trip well.

For me, the perfect road trip music isn’t necessarily the loudest, classic rock station that I can sing to at the top of my lungs with the windows down. Though it’s good to enjoy a good shoutfest once in a while, my favorite songs on the road are those to which I’ve tied memories — Great Lake Swimmers in a stained-glass-windowed apartment in Buenos Aires. The Weakerthans in the back of a pickup truck in Toronto. Meredith Bragg while crossing the Triborough bridge into Manhattan.

It’s transporting in a way, not unlike a well-done road trip.

So this week, enjoy a highly personalized, slightly indie Travel Tunes Episode 2. We’ll be back next week with a few of your suggestions and a lot more hip thrusts.

Gadling’s Friday Travel Tunes – Episode 1

Last week we debuted our new feature Friday Travel Tunes, in which we share some of our favorite travel-related and international songs. This week’s playlist contains everything from US/Cambodian psychedelic pop (“Tiger Phone Card”) to Swedish indie pop (“The Opposite of Hallelujah”) to English folk (“Little Lion Man”).

Just don’t make the mistake of listening to Andrew Bird‘s great song “Fiery Crash” while you’re on a plane. Big mistake.

Today we are going to try out something new – and share some travel tunes to help ease you into the weekend.

In this very first (zero edition), I’ve picked an all UK lineup. Not necessarily because American music is bad (I’ll admit that I occasionally listen to Taylor Swift!), but because I’ve often found British music to be the best for traveling.
