Top ski resorts list by Outside Magazine

Now that temperatures have truly dropped, and the snow is starting to gather on some mountains, planning for a ski vacation is perhaps next on your things to do list.

Outside Magazine has released their ranking of the top ski and snowboard destinations in North America. Looking them over could help you narrow down the choices if you want a top notch place.

Although places like Vail and Aspen are the ski buff resorts that come to my mind first when I think of skiing, perhaps because I can recall shots of some famous person decked out in ski gear at one of them, there are others rank higher.

Here’s the list in order:

Alta, Utah and Snowbird, Utah are tied for first place.

Whisler Blackcomb, British Columbia

Vail, Colorado

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Snowbasin, Utah

Fernie Alpine Resort, British Columbia,

Silverton, Colorado

Aspen, Colorado

Charlton Heston movie trivia and travel

When I read that Charlton Heston died last night, an image of him parting the Red Sea as Moses crossed my mind. “The Ten Commandments” was on TV just two weeks ago. While channel flipping, I came across it and he was just getting ready to hold up that staff. According to the New York Times article, the scene where he came down from the mountain with the Ten Commandment tablets was filmed at Mount Sinai.

Planet of the Apes” has several locations you can also go to and might recognize if you watch the movie. The scene with the top of the Statue of Liberty resting in the sand was filmed in a cove near Point Dume at Zuma in Malibu. The rest of the desert scenes were filmed around Lake Powell (where the spaceship crashed and the crew went to land), Glen Canyon and Page, Utah. I’ve driven through these places and they are gorgeous. I can imagine back in the 60s they were less traveled than today. Malibu Creek State Park was where the ape village was built. Fox Studios use to own the property. Here’s Charlton Heston’s World, a Web site I came across that has several “Planet of the Apes” photos and audio clips.

Other trivia. If you head to Rome, you’ll be near where the chariot race in “Ben-Hur “was filmed at Cinecittà Studios and the Sistine Chapel where Heston played Michaelangelo in The Agony and the Ecstasy.

As an interesting aside, not movie related, Charlton Heston was involved in the Civil Rights March on Washington with Martin Luther King Jr. With Martin Luther King Jr’s assassination 40 years-ago, just the day before yesterday, and Heston’s death the day after, that struck me. I don’t know why. It just did.

Après-ski with the best of them

It has been a while since “après-ski” meant simply “after skiing.” Today, après-ski is a whole philosophy. What you do after you ski often means more than how you ski, which is undoubtedly good news for people like myself.

Concierge.com has compiled a list of 13 best après-ski activities in the world. Here are the first 7 to give you an idea:

  1. Ultimate Suite — The Penthouse at the Sky Lodge, Park City, Utah (What’ll Snow You: Tickling the ivories on the baby grand piano in the 338-square-foot living room)
  2. Most Crackling Public Fireplace — The Great Room at the Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, Beaver Creek, Colorado (What’ll Snow You: The fireplace is a full three stories tall.)
  3. Niftiest Night Light — Hotel Alyeska, Girdwood, Alaska (What’ll Snow You: Watching the Northern Lights in your pajamas-and wondering if it was all a dream in the morning)
  4. Ultimate Spa Treatment — Virgin Touch Spa, The Lodge, Verbier, Switzerland (What’ll Snow You: Sweet relief provided by Sir Richard Branson’s own massage therapist.)
  5. Hottest Private Hot Tub — Game Creek Chalet, Vail, Colorado (What’ll Snow You: The bubbly views from 10,500 feet)
  6. Most Crackling Private Fireplace — The Chalet at Twin Farms, Barnard, Vermont (What’ll Snow You: The aroma from the fireplace, matched only by the perfumes from the award-winning kitchen)
  7. Finest Place to Drink Al Fresco — Le Chamois, Squaw Valley, California (What’ll Snow You: The California sunshine)

By the way, après-snowboarders are also welcome.

5-Star hotels: This year’s Mobil Travel Guide List

A few weeks back we gave you the TripAdvisor’s list of the dirtiest hotels in the U.S. On the opposite end of the spectrum, The Mobil Travel Guide has recently unveiled its lists of Five-Star and Four-Star hotels. These are the cream of the finest of the fine–the places to drool over.

In all, there are 14 Five-Star hotels in the United States. California has over half of them. There are nine in all in The Golden State. Three are in Beverly Hills, one is in Los Angeles and three are in San Francisco. Another is in Oakhurst and one is in Dana Point.

New York State, with four hotels in Manhattan and one in Saranac Lake, has the next largest number of 5-Stars. The rest are scattered among Colorado (2), District of Columbia (1), Florida (3), Georgia (2), Hawaii (1), Illinois (3), Massachusetts (3), Nevada (1), North Carolina (1), South Carolina (2), Tennessee (1), Texas(1), Utah (1), Vermont (1), Virginia (2), and Wyoming (1).

This is the first time Utah and Wyoming have made the cut. Of course, I was interested to see how Ohio fared. Not one hotel made it on the Five-Star list, but two are Four Star–one in Cincinnati, Cincinnatian Hotel and one in Cleveland, The Ritz-Carlton, Cleveland. To see how your state fares in the hotel luxury department, keep reading.

Cinematical is in Park City for Sundance

Our sister site Cinematical is holed up in chilly Park City, Utah for this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and they recently posted a great set of photos highlighting the beautiful snow-covered streets and shimmering lights of the city at night. Even if you’re not a movie buff, you can’t help but wish you were bundled up, warm Irish coffee in hand, hobnobbing with celebrities and checking out a new premiere. Jealous? I know I am.

Cinematical will in Park City all week for the festival, so head over to their Sundance hub to follow the latest in movie news, interviews, and reviews.
