Zagat Survey rates cruise lines – picks Cunard as “top overall”

After years of reviewing hotels, nightlife, bars and restaurants, the Zagat Survey has started publishing results of its first cruise line survey.

To generate reliable results, the Zagat.com survey asked cruise passengers for their opinion of cabins, service, facilities, activities and of course dining. The results were split into three categories – large ships, mid size ships and small ships (under 200 passengers). In total, over 22,700 cruise trips were used to reach a conclusion.

The winner of the “best overall” category was Cunard Line. Given the rich tradition of top class service on the Cunard ships, it should come as no surprise that they took the top spot. In the individual categories, Cunard won in the dining and facilities categories, and took the second spot in activities, right behind Disney.

Cunard Line has been crossing the Atlantic since 1840 and currently operates two ships – the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Victoria. In October of next year, the brand new Queen Elizabeth will join the fleet.

More on the results of the Zagat cruise line survey can be found here, and a PDF with the complete results is here.

Zagat’s 2008 best airlines survey

After receiving my 37th email of the day from an airline PR firm hailing their place in this year’s Zagat survey, I decided it might be worth taking a look into it. Rather than trumpet one airline’s accomplishments over the rest in any particular category, however, I’ll give you the straight up list of their #1’s. You can find it on their website too.

  • Best Large Domestic Airlines (Premium Seating): Continental Airlines
  • Best Large Domestic Airlines (Economy Seating): Jetblue Airways
  • Best International Airlines (Premium Seating): Singapore Airlines
  • Best Airline Websites: Southwest Airlines
  • Best In-Flight Entertainment: (Domestic): JetBlue Airways
  • Best In-Flight Entertainment (International): Virgin Atlantic Airways
  • Best Consumer On-Time Estimates (Domestic Only): Southwest Airlines
  • Best Midsized Domestic Airlines (Premium Seating): Virgin America
  • Best Midsized Domestic Airlines (Economy Seating): Midwest Airlines
  • Best International Airlines: (Economy Seating): Singapore Airlines
  • Best Frequent Flier Programs: Southwest Airlines
  • Best Value for the Money: (Domestic): Southwest Airlines
  • Best Value for the Money: (International): Continental Airlines
  • Best Luggage Policy (Domestic Only): Southwest Airlines

Prevailing theme? LOW COST CARRIERS. The airline with the best hedged fuel and most leverage in industry, Southwest, captured the most awards, while other carriers like Jetblue and Virgin America cleaned up with most of the rest. The only other domestic airlines to take home prizes were Continental Airlines and the near-defunct Midwest Airlines.

Perhaps this will send a message to the legacy carriers that they’re quickly losing ground to the younger, low-cost crowd and that it’s finally time to come off of their high horse and cater to the masses. Or perhaps they’ll use this as another excuse to instill fees and figure out how to make mileage tickets more expensive. My guess is the latter.

Rate Airlines on Zagat.com: See Results on the “Today” Show

I don’t know about you but I rely heavily on Zagat restaurant ratings, especially when visiting a new city. Because they use consumer-generated reviews (not food critic-generated ones) I have never found any of their reviews to be completely different than my experience at a particular restaurant. If a restaurant gets a rating of 23 or above, I know it will be good.

Zagat is not stopping at restaurants and hotels reviews, it looks like. They have created an airline survey and are asking passengers to rate “the good, the bad and the ugly” by Sunday, October 7. Results will be revealed live on the Today show in late November.

Air travel has rapidly become the fast food of leisure time. I wonder if any airline gets 23 or above…

Intv Tim Zagat

You may not know the face, but you’ll know the name. You
will at least if you happen to live in one of the country’s major metropolitan areas which are served by the Zagat
guides. Yes, Tim Zagat is the head of the burgundy covered book empire and a quick little interview with the man can be
found here at the Sun.…should you be interested in what
the food and entertainment guide kind has to say. I confess I enjoyed picking up a big of the history of the company, if
just because I’ve got so many of the damn guides around my apartment.
