Extreme Short-Term Getaways

We all know that many folks have a bad tendency to not take vacations, with, for example, more than half of Americans leaving unused vacation days at the end of the year. But, dear reader, the marketplace is adapting!

Tour operators are increasingly catering to short-term travelers. (Leave it to us Europeans to catch on to a vacationing idea first!)

Not wanting to take more than a few days in a row off, and yet wanting to, say, sea kayak off Turkey or hot-air balloon in Kenya, or go gorge-swinging over Victoria Falls? Now operators like Original Travel have invented the “Big Short Break,” with a Friday afternoon departure and a back-by-Wednesday guarantee.

They are not the only ones: Abercrombie & Kent, and Explore! are doing it too. Choose from cage diving off Cape Town, to voodoo village visits in west Africa, to snowshoeing across Finland. They are offering hundreds of short-term, high-adventure trips for those with little time and big ideas.

Hopefully, it won’t be too long before this idea catches on in the States too!
