Moby Dick on Studio360

If you’ve ever listened to Studio360 with Kurt Andersen, you know
that occasionally they put out a really great story that kind of holds onto you and teaches you something you didn’t
know.

That actually happens quite a lot with this show. To me anyway.

Well, they did it recently with this piece on Moby Dick. The story
looks back at the influence and artistry of the Herman Melville classic, and uses the work and interpretation of
several major artists including Tony Kushner and Laurie Anderson to illustrate the book’s significance.

Something about seeing James Cameron’s Aliens of the Deep last night that sparked my interest in bizarre sea
creatures. And so today’s POTD goes to this little guy, a
glossodorid, or  sea slug, by Steve Drogin.

Michigan’s Maritime Tours

Ahh, the Great Lakes!  So much to be said, so much to be explored and found in and
arround Michigan’s waters.  If you are looking to mark your
calendar with a summer escape consider checking out one of the hundred’s of lighthouses, visiting the
maritime museums, taking a shipwreck tour or just diving
the Great Lakes
.

The Michigan site for tourism features an
excellent driving adventure,
“Echoes
of the Edmund Fitzgerald,”
which has quite an itinerary and uncovers the tales of the
vessel.  The Edmund Fitzgerald is just one of the many carrier ships to travel the
Great Lakes under extremely stormy weather.  But then again, if you plan your travels right, they
can be far from stormy and packed with more than enough beautiful roadside and lakeside scenery for the
asking.

GTHO: Turks and Caicos on the Cheap

It’s time for our weekly GTHO (Get the Hell Out) post.

The Turks and Caicos is a small group of islands in the Caribbean where, I say this without reservation, you will
find some of the best diving on the planet. The islands are quiet, more or less unsullied by tourism, and quite
fun…fun, that is, if diving, hanging out reading on the beach is your idea of fun. If your idea of fun is Senor Frogs
and Wet-T-shirt contests, T&C isn’t for you.

Today MSNBC runs a piece on Turks and Caicos deals, getting
there, staying there, diving there. Prices are relatively low, though not pauper cheap. But if you are considering a
short-term trip to GTHO for a long weekend somewhere, this could be your ticket.

Here are some of the sample fares:

  • From $564 – Miami (American)

  • From $664 – New York (Delta)

  • From $697 – Washington, D.C. (American)

  • From $738 – Chicago (Multiple carriers)

  • From $862 – Los Angeles (Multiple carriers)

Watch Review: Barato y Caro

I’m on the lookout for a new watch and
decided to look around and test drive a few…several that are within my range, and a couple that are not. I wanted
reliability most of all, as well as features like the ability to go underwater and, where possible, cool features like
an altimeter.

After spending some time talking to folks and looking around, here are the results so far. I’ll be posting other
discoveries as I go along.

Caro:

In the expensive range, the Breitling is the king of the hill.  The screw-lock push buttons on the
BREITLING Chronomat Evolution make this a watch that can go to
1000 feet…which means you’re body will pop before the watch does. It is elegant and amazingly sturdy, I mean really
sturdy, an amazing piece of engineering. But of, course, at $3,630, it should be.

Another pricey watch is the Seiko’s Sportura Kinetic
Chronograph
. Like most watches these days, it has a built-in stopwatch, but the elegance and durability of this
watch makes it a strong second place. But it, too, is pricey at $3,500.

Barato:

On the cheaper side, I think my favorite watch so far is the

Suunto X3
. I got to test drive one of these babies and was very pleased. It is elegant in design, simple as pie,
sleek and with all the functionality you want including a stopwatch, but it also features a heart rate monitor,
altimeter, barometer and thermometer. I took it to the top of my building and got almost giddy watching the altitude
climb as I went up the elevator. Can’t wait to try it out in the mountains.

This is the one I recommend if you’re looking for something cheap and easy. Hopefully, I’m going to be looking at
several of the Timex watches in the near future and will post about what I find.
