The Kungsladen: Snow or Summer

Hard-core cross-country fans who want to bail on
their easy little local trails take notice. It might be time to take on a real challenge: The
Kungsladen, or King’s Trail in Sweden. The trail links Abisko and Sarek
national parks, and lies above the Arctic Circle, so pack your long underwear.

As you push your way along a 58-mile section of trail through the Kebnekaise Range, you will gaze upon some of the
most remote terrain in the world. You’ll climb slowly rising mountains and find shelter and warmth at places like the
Salka Mountain Hut.  Of course, dufing the summer, you can also find some kick-ass hiking if you head to the
Kungsladen and climb to the top of Sweden’s highest peak, 6,965-foot Mount Kebnekaise. Once there, cast your eyes to
the West and catch views of distant Norway. And when you’re weary, head back to Stockholm, and order yourself up a nice
Aquavit. Prost!

Ski Chile Now

When I lived in Santiago, Chile, I made it down south to ski a bunch of times and found the Andes a superb place to
hit the slopes. The winter was a bit dry when i was there, but I did manage to get in some fine days at
Portillo and Valle
Nevado
. So it was a nice surprise to see
this piece in the Guardian
celebrating these places. As you probably know, the Chilean ski season runs from mid-June to early October, opposite
what it is in the Northern Hemisphere. Around that time there is usually an eight/nine foot base for some solid
shredding.

Inka Pen

I am a pen fanatic. Sounds weird, I know, but over the years I’ve used so many crappy pens that I now am pretty
finicky about what I take with me. If you rifle through my pockets on any particular day (hey! stop that!), you can
usually find at least one (often more than one) Uni-ball Micro, black.

But now I have another favorite. I just got my hands on an Inka
Pen
, a real outdoorsman’s pen.

The Inka pen in the brainchild of Greg Adelman, an optical engineer, who came up with the idea for a new kind of
outdoor writing instrument while doing field work for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, where he
helped oceanographers design instruments for oceanic research.

In the course of his work, he discovered there was a real niche for a pen that could hold up under extreme
conditions. Most pens (even my beloved Uni-balls) don’t handle wet, windy conditions, and so Adelman began to think
about creating a pen that you could take anywhere. The result is the Inka pen, which uses a pressurized ink cartridge
that writes in heat, cold, upside down, at high altitudes and under water.

It is great. I keep it now right on my keychain, and even went paddling with it recently. The
uniqueness of the pen stems from its non-corrosive casing, complete with a watertight seal built to withstand harsh
environments. The pen folds up nicely, halving its size when it’s not in use. And it’s ridiculously light, weighing in
at a mere 0.6 ounce.

Completely weaning me from my Uni-balls is probably impossible, but I now take the Inka wherever I go.

Teva Mountain Games

Cool event alert. The Teva
Mountain Games
is happening June 1 to 5th in Vail, Colorado. This is a seriously fun event for outdoor fanatics, as
numerous sports are represented ,and there is also music and food…all within the blissful surroundings of Vail.
Professional and amateur athletes  compete in six sports and ten disciplines including: freestyle and extreme
kayaking, kayak and raft paddlecross, bouldering, speed and dyno climbing, mountain bike trials, cross country racing
and the Vail Hill Climb, trail running championships, and the GNC adventure sprint race. One helluva a great way to
usher in summer.

Here’s the schedule.

ipod gear: Otterbox

If you spend much time outside messing about with your ipod, you know how risky it can be
to listen to your music and be active. I was kayaking with mine recently and it slipped off my vest where I had it
clipped and almost fell into the water. I almost lost $500 just like that.

Is there a solution? You bet. The OtterBox for iPod
20G & 30/40/60G, is a waterproof, interactive case that lets you access controls through a durable, and relatively
compact design. The OtterBox is innovative, but aesthetically appealing. The Otterbox is impact resistant, so it’s not
going to withstand a mountain biking wipeout at 30 mph, but just might survive falling out of your hand while you
jog.  A convenient belt clip provides headphone cable management. This is a great new ipod innovation, and an
ideal solution for traveling ipodders.
