Great little surf photo is our POTD. A clean, beautiful
break on a pair of waves in some nameless place. It comes from localsurfer’s Flickr photostream and just seemed like
the perfect way to herald in summer.
National Scholastic Surfing Championship
A couple of world-famous surf breaks will play host to the National Scholastic Surfing
Championship (NSSA) starting today through next Saturday. From Cotton’s Point to Upper Trestles and lower Trestles
in San Clemente, hundreds of surfers will hang ten together to compete for national titles. There are four categories:
oen, explorerer, air show and inter-scholastic. The NSSA is the highest profile amateur competitive surfing association
in the United States, and you can find out all about the competition here.
Surfing Lessons Online
Well, it’s probably not quite the same as actually being in the water and having an instructor judge your stand up
technique, but it could be useful nonetheless. You can actually learn to surf online…sort of.
This site explains the basic techniques for
getting up and how to choose the best board for your first ride. It gives a primer on paddling “Body weight needs to be
positioned along the centre of the board. Feet need to be raised slightly off the end of the board.” and what do if
when/if you actually stand up, or Pop Up, as the move is called.
The Pop-Up is like “doing a press-up, in that the first part of the move is to straighten your arms out in front of
you, but instead of keeping your legs and body straight you need to bring your legs up and under your body, planting
your feet in the correct positions for surfing”. Not a bad description. Maybe the key is to print these pages out on
waterproof paper and have them tucked nicely into your suit as you head out to hang ten your first time.
Green Chile and Surfing
Sorry, it is one of the best countries in the world. The people are cool, the country is (now at least) stable and
relatively prosperous, and from top to bottom, it is one of the most diverse places geographically you will ever
see.
In the North, there are the driest deserts in the world, in the south miles of glaciers and one of the most
magnificent parks on the globe. It also has some of the best surfing on the planet, a fact in evidence
in this video from
Surfer Magazine which is short, but downright cheerful.
TV Re-Evolves
If you don’t spend much time watching video on the Web, then you’re missing out on a big
revolution. More and more great stuff is turning up online, as both people who couldn’t get their insane clips or
stories aired on TV turn to the net, and even some of the traditional media start to get wise. Let us praise this
movement.
Now take a look at the re-evolution of adventure sports Web site.
Granted this isn’t homespun TV, but the site is over-flowing with great, intense video from a world of sports far
outside the traditional (and let’s face it, boring) triumvirate of football, basketball and baseball. Re-evolution TV
has got people doing insane things they call sports on ice, water and land. There is so much to sit and watch here, I
can’t begin to list it all, but I will say the interface is sleek and intense, and the videos are a blast.
