Epic Honolua Bay

It’s not everyday you come across an article
like this
on MSNBC.com. Written in a style that is a bit unconventional for mainstream media, but good nonetheless.
The article will appeal to surfers and non surfers alike who dream of moving to Hawaii and spending the rest of your
life surfing its glorious beaches. In this case, the author celebrates epicness of Honolua Bay and its “most
manageable, meaty bowls”.  I really liked this article, the style of writing, the enthusiasm of the author as he
reminds us why surfing is so addicting, and why a place like Hawaii stirs something deep in surfer’s souls.

Today’s POTD is from a poster available online, but it
is way cool. The guy here is obviously in a serious wipeout, but it looks like he’s defying gravity and almost surfing
the wave, sans board, upside down. Like, totally gnarly. Sort of an Endless Summer meets 2001 Space Odyssey thing.

Dogtown and Peralta on NPR

Did anyone out there see Dogtown and
Z-Boys
? I did. I loved it. The film captured the flavor of the California skate culture like no other film. And it
was also just a beautiful film to watch. I grew up in So Cal, so these guys were legends to me.

So if you enjoyed that film as much as I did, then you probably also know that Stacey Peralta, who
directed the documentary, has a new film out based on the doc
called Lords of Dogtown. Again, it’s all
about the surf and skate culture of California in the 1970s with a special emphasis on places like Venice Beach which
are known for their ample sidewalks and the “we can give a shit” attitude of the locals. If you’re a fan of
Peralta and his partner Catherine Hardwicke, you’ll probably enjoy listening
to this NPR interview with them.

International Surfing Day

You probably didn’t even know there was such a thing as
International Surfing Day. Well, there is,
and it is sponsored by (who else?) Surfer Magazine. This year ISD takes place on
June 21, the longest day of the year, which will giev you plenty of time to prepare and break out your stick for a
blissful day of wave riding. This unofficial, official surfers’ holiday was established “to promote and celebrate the
sport while bringing awareness to the state of our oceans and beaches.”  To some folks I know EVERY day is ISD,
but for most of us, this may be as good an excuse to get out that we have.

I have been looking closely at this
photo
to see if it has some kind of photoshop manipulation. But I’m no expert, so it’s hard to tell. If it’s real,
it’s one of the most amazing surf photos I’ve ever seen. The photo appears to have been taken at Jaws in Hawaii.
