Photo of the Day (3.1.09)

When I think about bicycles in the mountains, it tends to immediately remind me of the Tour de France. I picture an aerial camera shot of the riders, decked out in colorful jerseys, struggling up some ridiculously steep mountain pass. Flickr user kyAnosaUm also had cycling on his mind when he took this photo he describes as “Huge Bicycles on the Pyrenees.” I know several Tour de France stages run through the Pyrenees – perhaps there’s some connection here? In any case I love the setting and the random bicycles – it makes for quite the intriguing visual.

Have any photos you’ve taken in the Pyrenees? Or maybe just in the Poconos? Why not add them to the Gadling photo pool on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

Winter Adventures in the Pyrenees

Spain is seldom considered a great destination for skiers, but this story from the Wall Street Journal, says that the Pyrenees Mountains, found in the northern part of that country, are amongst Europe’s hidden gems when it comes to winter outdoor adventure.

Far from the crowds that are the norm for the top ski destinations in Europe, the Pyrenees of Spain offer plenty of solitude and untouched snow, along remote trails that wind their way between rock towers and hidden valleys. The area is almost completely lacking in ski resorts as they are traditionally known, so those looking to ski Spain’s northern mountains will generally need a guide to help them find the safest and best cross country or downhill routes. These trails generally aren’t as long as those found in the more developed resort areas of the Pyrenees or Alps, but they make up for it with their unique setting.

The fact that the region hasn’t been over developed yet by ski resorts doesn’t mean that visitors will have be lacking in other amenities. Over the past ten years, Northern Spain has been a growing destination for tourists in general, and that has led to the construction of a number of inns and weekend apartment complexes, as well as given rise to mountain guide services. Restaurants and clubs have added to the nightlife as well.

The region is also rich in culture and history, making the entire experience very different from the more overly commercialized skiing destinations in other European countries. Head here when you want to escape the crowds and have a ski adventure unlike any other.

Minicountry Skiing. Hello, Andorra!

Some people say that Spain is the California of Europe: you can beach it in the morning and ski in the afternoon. Not that Spaniards would ever try to attempt such a packed schedule…

While you can ski in the Spanish Pyrenees, some people say that skiing is better in Andorra, one of those tiny countries in Europe, stuck between France and Spain. It only has 60,000 people (and the world’s highest life expectancy). You could probably meet all of them on the slopes. Everyone else will be in the stores…Andorra is a tax haven and tourists like to come here to buy booze and cigs.

This site offers good information on skiing. Sounds pretty affordable, too. Plus, it adds another easy country to your list. Not that you care about lists, of course.

Word for the Travel Wise (10/10/06)

Just as fall begins it seems as though winter weather comes bulldozing its way in complete with snow flurries and flakes. Now in my mind it couldn’t be a more beautiful or romantic time to plan a holiday in France and this Pyrenees winter walking excursion looks perfect if you share my same thoughts. Responsible Travel has several departure dates in December as well as early 2007, but if you’re not into package deals use their info as a guide and build your own trip. I’m not a big fan of packaged programs either, but I must say this one kicking off in the French spa town of Luchon does seem pretty decent.

Today’s word is a French word used in France:
