Photo of the Day (3.22.09)

This past Friday was the first day of Spring, but here in New York you would have hardly known it. Friday morning we had snow showers, and temperatures have been hovering in the 40’s and 50’s. I’d much rather be hanging out with Flickr user wesleyrosenblum who took this quirky shot on the beach down in Punta del Este in Uruguay.

First off, I’m really fond of the framing here. I like how the tiny people and the hand are condensed down at the bottom of the frame, leaving the rest of the image for a seemingly limitless blue sky. Aside from that, you’ve gotta admire any municipality that will install a “giant hand” sculpture in the sand. I bet it makes for quite the sight when you come upon it on the beach.

Have any fantastic photos of Uruguay you’d like to share with us? Or maybe just from Utica, NY? Why not add them to the Gadling pool on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

Photo of the Day (3.12.09)

Today’s photo of the day comes from Willy Volk at Lake Worth, Florida. So often when I’m browsing through Flickr, I’ll see a picture like this and exclaim, “why didn’t I think of this?!”

Clicking on the metadata to Willy’s picture shows he used the aperture priority mode (as explained by Karen Walrond) which gave him a shutter speed of 1/8th of a second. Just the right amount of time to blur the wave, making it look like it’s floating above the sand. He took another picture with a faster shutter speed here so you can see the difference.

As for the bottom right corner… Willy, is that your foot?

Nice shot! Karen also used this picture as an example of why you just might want to shoot some blurred pics.

Are you a Flickr user who’d like to share a travel related picture or two for our consideration? Submit it to Gadling’s Flickr group right now! We just might use it for our Photo of the Day!

Heart-shaped Croatian island attracts curious, lovebirds

Croatia’s geography lends itself to love. The country is blessed with a scenic coastline along the Adriatic Sea – a stretch of land that is dotted with picturesque rocky islands and scenic beach towns like Dubrovnik and Hvar. Not surprisingly, Croatia has long attracted tourists and couples – during the summer months, it’s the perfect spot for laying on the beach, island-hopping and plenty of outdoor fun.

According to the Daily Mail, Croatia’s coast is also home to another unintentionally romantic destination – a heart-shaped island recently highlighted on Google Maps. Though the island is uninhabited, tourists have recently caught on and have been clamoring for access. The island’s owners, overwhelmed by requests to visit, have renamed the small landmass as “Lover’s Island” to capitalize on the demand. I guess the original name, Galesnjak, didn’t exactly roll off the tongue…

As romantic as it may sound to head off to this remote heart-shaped landmass, take note – the island has no buildings and no access to fresh water. February temperatures are also hovering in the high 30’s. Still for some, access to one of the world’s more remote destinations (and with a theme to boot!) is powerful motivation. I guess when it comes to love, emotion sometimes trumps proper logic.

Photo of the Day (2-11-09)

With Valentine’s Day coming up, I searched for a photo that had something to do with love. When I typed in the word love to Gadling’s photo pool, this lovely homage to the color blue appeared. Hmmm. Let’s go with it. Love can be blue as in the song that goes, “Blue, blue my world is blue, blue is my world when I’m without you. . .”

In StrudelMonkey’s case, this glorious blue world of stone was found at the beach on the west coast of Ireland. Here’s an indication of how moving in close to the subject can make for an alluring image.

If you have an alluring image to share, send it our way at Gadling’s Flickr Photo Pool. It might be picked for a Photo of the Day. To hear “Love is Blue,” keep reading. Happy Valentine’s Day early.

The video is of Paul Mauriat and his orchestra playing the song “Love is Blue.”

Photo of the day (12.20.09)

For a person who has never been too fond of Southern California, I’ve recently found myself drawn to the region. Perhaps it’s because the weather is good — or maybe it’s because the girls are so much prettier and because I don’t have to think of home.

Either the way, in my last three visits to the area I’ve lingered longer every time. On Saturday, I took an early ride up the coast line from Marina Del Ray up past the Santa Monica Pier to visit an Ultimate Frisbee tournament. Afterwards in Venice Beach, where this photo was taken, I had breakfast on Washington. At home, the high temperature on Saturday was 12°.

mce323‘s picture of Venice reminds me of the parts of the city that I really love, the boutiques along the PCH, the cliffs in Malibu and the California style burritos. It makes me almost want to move to SoCal. Almost.
