Greetings from Crete: Diving Like It’s 2999

If Crete is the first place you will ever dive, chances are you won’t ever do it again…unless you like hanging out underwater, some 60 feet deep and in poor visibility, and seeing about ten fish an hour, that is.

If diving here is any indication of the state of fish in the Mediterranean, we should all be very, very scared. There are, for sure, more fish at an average all-inclusive hotel restaurant buffet table than there are in the water off the northern coast of Crete.

To be fair, we did see a few barracuda and a couple fireworms, but that’s about it. Save your Euros for sightseeing and frappe-drinking instead.

Photo of the Day (8/24/07)

Another Photo of the Day from former Gadling blogger Willy.

This one features a Lemon Shark, so named because of the ripe lemons they usually keep pinched between their teeth and gums. Lemon Sharks like to do this to keep their breath smelling fresh; they are, after all, the so-called Gentlemen of the Seas.

Lemon Sharks are also very generous sharks. They simply love it when divers reach deep into their serrated pie holes and pull out the lemons they have cached there. I don’t see any lemons on this particularly fine specimen so that means Willy must have already plucked them out. Great job, Willy. Keep up the good work!

Photo of the Day (8/23/07)

Former Gadling blogger Willy has really been loading up our Flickr Pool with some fantastic shots of his most recent underwater adventure.

While most have been wetsuit-wetting photos of man eating sharks, this one offers a far more playful side to the denizens of the deep. There’s something about the angles of the dolphins contrasted against the diver that’s just visually arresting here. And the smiles. Gotta love those dolphin smiles.

If you have some equally cool photos from your last vacation that you want us to consider for our Photo of the Day, jump on over to our Gadling Flickr Pool and upload away. No matter how crappy they might be, we’ll still publish them if you work for Gadling (just kidding, Willy!).

Best American Diving Cities

A nice post from Willy over at Divester about the best
places in America to go diving. I question all of the Florida diving spots. But then again, I’ve not done a great deal
of diving in Florida. I know Willy would object to my objection. But I think the best places in the states are spots
like Monterey and Seattle. Yes, Seattle. The Northwest provides some of the most amazing, albeit cold, diving in the
world, with Giant Octopus and LingCod the size of children.

Anyway, good stuff over at Divester. Give a
look.
