Getting Married? Here’s Some Good Advice.

My recent post about the wedding at Prague’s Ruzyne airport got me recalling my own marriage to Carol in 2003. Travel’s a big part of our life together. Even though we’re both from Auckland, we actually met in Thailand, and more often than not it’s her photographs which complement my words.

When we got married we’d already been living together for several years, so certainly didn’t need anything to set up a shared home. Instead we made a radical travel-oriented change to the traditional wedding register. Rather than ask for toasters, blenders and bed linen, our wedding invitation listed a range of experiences across five countries we would be visiting on our honeymoon. Guests were invited to “buy” us one of the experiences which ranged from cheap cafe meals to a helicopter ride around Manhattan.

When we got to each experience we had a local take a photo of us which we then sent out with our “Thank You” cards once we got home.

Cynical readers might say we were “just asking for money”, and hey, they may be right.

But the idea was a real hit with our guests and we made sure we didn’t get loads of unwanted stuff clogging up our small apartment. And we had a longer honeymoon than we could have normally afforded.

Ideal Wedding Gift: A Honeymoon!

I’m in a long-term relationship and we’re not planning on tying the knot in the near future, but by the time we do, I suspect we will have all the things that typically go on a wedding registry: the blenders, linens, silverware, etc. So this idea of registering for a honeymoon instead of houseware sounds awesome! In fact, even if I didn’t own a single plate, I’d probably still want to register for a vacation rather than a food processor.

There are a number of travel companies that offer honeymoon registries, and basically, guests contribute an amount towards the whole trip, or they can purchase individual tourist items such as restaurant gift certificates, tours, tickets to shows and so on.

Maybe I should hurry up this whole marriage thing ….

Have Your Honeymoon in Space

My fiance and I occasionally speculate about where we’d like to have our honeymoon. Someplace urban? Someplace close to nature? Maybe both?

One option we hadn’t considered, is space.

That’s the plan for Loretta and George Whitesides, the couple who intend to have their honeymoon in zero gravity. You can learn all about the couple’s mission du love at their new Web site, spacelove.org.

Here’s an excerpt: “We hope that with our flight, we can help bring love and peace to a place that is very important to us – space,” said Loretta (…) The sub-orbital spaceflight will launch the couple over 100 km high, past the boundary of space. The flight will include several minutes of weightlessness, a view of the blackness of space and the curvature of the Earth.”

Sounds romantic, indeed. Check out the site for updates on the couple’s preparation, and advice on how you can have your very own outer space marriage!

Celebrity Honeymoons

Tom and Nicole went to Venice and stayed at the Hotel Cipriani, where Casanova reportedly woo’ed many women. Richard Burton and Liz Taylor visited Botswana’s Chobe Game Reserve, where the views of the stars rival the views of the wildlife. Bill and Melinda Gates celebrated at the Four Seasons Resort Lanai in Hawaii, where they reserved all the rooms and all the airplane seats into the island to stymie zealous paparazzi.

Even if you don’t watch entertainment shows that detail every facet of celebrities’ lives, you might find this profile of celebrity couples and where they honeymooned interesting. From Tiger and Elin to Denise and Charlie, the round-up discusses the accommodation the various couples enjoyed and also dishes some of the dirt on their special events. If this piece doesn’t quell your insatiable thirst for stars and their honeymoons, check out these resources:

In looking over these lists, it occurs to me that Britney and Jessica stayed at the same place in Fiji. That’s, like, so lame.

The Wandering Honeymooners

OK, so maybe you spent your honeymoon watching your new spouse drop the wedding gift money at the Pai Gow Poker tables in Atlantic City. Come on. I can’t be the only one. Well, it doesn’t matter anyway because your honeymoon probably still pales in comparison to the following one.

Television presenters Sarah Lane and Brendan Moran quit their jobs, tied the knot, and embarked upon a year-long, globe-hopping honeymoon. They’re about five months into their journey, and the newlyweds have already hit such exotic destinations as Greece, Russia, and Vietnam. The duo have been writing about their road warrior escapades/comic misadventures on their blog: The Traveling Morans. They also release humorous — and well-edited — videos about once or twice a month via their podcast.

Their trip is definitely worth following because the Morans are adorable and funny as newlyweds should be. Not only are their stories honest, but they’re filled with those beautiful moments that take you back to your own honeymoon memories of the Showboat Casino and Hotel. Right, that’s just me again.
