Pets at Hyatt Regency Mission Bay get their own “Pawsport” loyalty program

Do you own a pampered pooch? Thanks to Hyatt Regency Mission Bay‘s new Pawsport program, your four-legged friend can receive “top dog” treatment during their stay.

“Stainless steel bowls, plush dog beds and a haute-dog menu ensure your pooch will be lavishly spoiled while away from home,” said leader of the hotel pack, General Manager Moshen Khaleghi.

At check-in, furry friends will receive their own Pet Pawsport with vital information about program offerings and stamp boxes to the track number of hotel visits that quickly add up to posh pet prizes.

Similar to the Hyatt Gold Passport program for their two-legged guests, the Pet Pawsport rewards your critters frequent stays with added amenities and amazing awards, including cool gift certificates and personalized identification carrier tag. “The more times your dog stays here, the bigger and better the prize,” noted Khaleghi.

Even first-time guests can enjoy the in-room doggie menu with its mouth-watering and tail-wagging entrees. For $5 each, order up all-nature human-edible items such as Breath Bustin Biscuits, Woofie Cookies, Snicker-Poodles and Mission Bay Liver. The hotel offers tons of shady and sunny places for dogs to romp and roam. There are plenty of parks and “barking lots” with disposal bays and trash bins as well as fresh watering holes.

Pet-friendly room rates start at $189 per night with a daily $30-50 service fee for guests traveling with their dog. Pets up to 50 pounds are allowed, multiple dogs cannot exceed 75 pounds in total. Guests must sign a waiver at check-in.

Hyatt hotels offer hypoallergenic rooms

While down pillows and duvets add a plush decor to hotel beds, allergy sufferers find this added perk a nuisance and not a luxury. Hypoallergenic pillows and non-fragrant amenities can be requested from any hotel guest, but would it be easier to just designate a few rooms in the hotel as “hypoallergenic rooms”?

Hyatt thinks so, which is why the hotel company announced their “allergy friendly rooms” across its brand of hotels.

The rooms will be priced at an extra $20 to $30 per night, but will be free of dust mites, which live and multiply in bedding, carpeting and upholstered furniture. The move comes as Hyatt and other hoteliers look to capitalize on the growing number of allergy sufferers. According to the National Institutes of Health, about 54 percent of Americans are sensitive to at least one allergen, which results in sneezing, itching and in some cases, asthmatic attacks. The presence of odors, mold, dust or animal dander can be harmful to those with severe allergies.

To help alleviate the suffering for some travelers, Hyatt is relying on Pure Solutions, a privately held New York-based company that claims it can remove 98 percent of bacteria and viruses from hotel rooms. With this new partnership, Hyatt plans to designate a total of 2,000 rooms at 125 Hyatt Resort, Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency, Hyatt and Andaz properties across the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean as hypoallergenic rooms available by the end of 2010. If the rooms prove to be popular, Hyatt will pay to expand the program.Just how will Pure rid the rooms of allergens?

“Pure’s technicians first take apart the air-handling system in the room, disinfect the parts, treat them with an agent to ward off moisture and add a tea tree oil cartridge that releases a natural anti-microbial agent. After disinfecting every surface in the room, Pure “shocks” the room for two to three hours with highly concentrated ozone to kill mold, bacteria and other unwanted organisms. They then spray carpets, curtains and surfaces with a bacteriostatic shield, Brault said, which lasts up to two and a half years and bonds with bacteria on a molecular level.”

The rooms are also equipped with medical-grade purifiers that eliminate dust, odor and small particles; beds and pillows are encased in microfiber that is impenetrable to dust mites, and allergens in the pillow feathers are removed.

The idea and effort behind these rooms are worthy of accolades but I have to wonder: Why not just do it for all rooms? Surely, everyone would appreciate breathing a little easier at night.

Hyatt Regency to reopen New Orleans hotel

The Hyatt Regency New Orleans closed its doors after the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, but five years later the hotel is poised for a grand reopening.

The New Orleans Hyatt was a familiar fixture during the city’s coverage of Katrina. The hotel, located near the Louisiana Superdome, suffered from water and wind damage after the hurricane. In 2007, was purchased by Poydras Properties Hotel Holdings, which includes a Hyatt subsidiary, for $32 million, setting the hotel back on a path to reopening.

According to Hyatt, the multi-million renovations will include all 1,193 rooms and 53 suites. The new restaurants include a 350-seat, full-service restaurant with private and semi private dining rooms; a 210-seat media/action bar with private and semi-private lounges; a 70-seat atrium bar; a 2,000 square-foot full service coffee bar; a 24-hour convenience store featuring fresh food items; and a 7,600 square-foot specialty restaurant.

The reopening is part of an economic development plan designed by the New Orleans Regional Planning Commission and New Orleans Downtown Development District to revitalize the New Orleans business district.
