Texan arrested for mobile calls on aircraft

We’re slowly starting to see more stories of airline crews getting fed up and kicking people off flights for using their mobile phones, but none are as controversial as this.

A Texas businessman named Joe Jones was recently arrested following a Southwest Airlines flight on which he refused to get off of his phone prior to landing. Flight attendants had repeatedly asked the man to stop the conversation and turn off his mobile, receiving a “kiss my ass” in return each time they asked. Frustrated, they had state police meet him at the gate, where he continued to make a ruckus.

As his spokesman later explained, however, Jones had just received word that his father’s heart had stopped beating and was wildly trying to contact the hospital. Given the life and death situation, he felt it necessary to make the phone calls.

And I can empathize with that situation — if I knew that my parents were gravely ill and had to call the hospital, I can totally see how I would be trying to call the doctor in panic. My questions are as follows: how did Jones get the message in the first place? Was he on the plane with his phone on when a text came in or did he get the call before he boarded? And isn’t interfering with an aircraft landing with your mobile phone signal also a life and death situation?

UK airline Flybe caught hiring actors to boost passenger loads

Many Americans don’t realize it, but the Low Cost Carrier (LCC) situation in the UK is downright comical. It seems that every other week or so Ryanair is in the news for some stupid advertising campaign involving boobs, slimeball politicians or both. But competition is pretty tight in the LCC market, so they have to earn their stripes in some way, right?

This week, little known budget carrier flybe was caught attempting to hire actors and actresses to pose as passengers on their flights to fool authorities at Norwich Airport. Why would they do something crazy like this, you ask? Apparently the airline had a deal with the municipality to fly fifteen thousand passengers on the Norwich-Dublin route. If they didn’t hit their numbers by March 31, the airport got to levy a $560,000 fine against the budget carrier

At just a few days out, they were still 172 passengers short, so they started placing ads for free round trip tickets for the weekend, posting ads on actors’ websites and asking their employees to be ready to fly roundtrip over the weekend.

Norwich and the news agencies naturally caught wind and now the airport is pretty sour with flybe. Each party called the other greedy and environmentally unconscious, and now flybe is not invited over for tea this weekend.

Still, you have to admit that it’s a pretty low stunt to pull if you’re not going to make your numbers. Corporate greed, anyone?

Alitalia flight diverts because of toxic fumes; finds minced onions

Alitalia has fallen on hard times lately. Business is down, morale is low and last week, Italy’s government had to approve a takeover bid by Air France & KLM to help bail out their ailing national airline.

I put forth a few possible causes for their demise in an article last week, but perhaps I was being too generous. Perhaps, rather, it’s because they’re idiots.

Case in point: earlier last week, an Alitalia cargo flight en route from Milan to Miami suddenly diverted to Boston‘s Logan airport. The crew, completely outfitted in oxygen masks and reporting “toxic fumes,” safely landed and turned the aircraft over safety inspectors in haz-mat mode, expecting the worst.

Indeed, cargo manifests indicated several toxic chemicals were on board. But upon closer inspection, investigators found that all of those were packaged properly and safely. The real source of the noxious fumes? Onions. Ten thousand pounds of minced onions.

It took three days to sort out the ruckus, fill out the paperwork and get the aircraft back on its way.

As for the onions, they were placed on a “No Fly List” then put on trucks bound for Florida.

Two more young women claim mistreatment on Southwest

I officially feel bad for Southwest Airlines. In the wake of the internet ruckus when two young women flying from Florida to California got booted off a round trip flight for what they say was “being too pretty”, another two women from San Diego have spoken up and cried foul.

The sisters say that they were “unfairly treated and humiliated” on a flight between San Diego and Las Vegas, during which they were apparently “obnoxious and annoying,” according to the SW incident report. During one of the confrontations after a flight attendant refused the option to serve them alcohol, one of them allegedly claimed “I work for the TSA and you will be taken care of.” The women deny this.

In either a retaliatory or precautionary measure, the women were escorted off the flight upon arrival, after which they were questioned for a couple of hours and released.

What I find most interesting is that they’ve stayed mum about this entire affair and hadn’t even contacted customer service until a few days ago. I think that after the too-pretty-to-fly incident, they decided that it was their turn for the spotlight.

Apparently they’re currently investigating legal action.

Update: Southwest comments on the fiasco.

It’s snowing in New York today. You know what that means

No, I don’t actually mean flight delays although those are inevitable this weekend. Better avoid any place east of the Mississippi.

What gets me is the news coverage. Gothamist is right. The minute it starts snowing in the city, all news channels have a tendency to report the same old cliches over and over. You know some poor struggling journalist is waiting for his big on-screen break so he/she is more than happy to report (ski cap and gloves on, of course) from the side of the Long Island Expressway, calling the “events” all kinds of ridiculous names and showing fancy alert graphics. And, there is always that footage of some dude skiing through Central Park or kids building snowmen in Greenwich Village. Oh, please, no!

While the snow is nice, white and fluffy right now, I am pretty sure it will turn into nasty slush by the end of the day. If you have a choice, don’t come close to the city this weekend. If you want to be a part of it, watch the breathless coverage of the “worst storm this season” online.
