Photo of the Day (03.06.10)

I’m one of those people who believes that it’s OK to pee in the ocean. And in lakes. And pools. Basically, bodies of water bigger than my bathtub are fair game for urination. But, I’m always worried that pools will have that dye that activates when urine is introduced into the water. Can you imagine how embarrassing that would be? Anyway, I was reminded of how nice it is to just pee in the water when I saw this picture by Flickr user JasonBechtel. This sea lion is hidden so perfectly in the dark water. Even if that pee dye were activated, who would notice? Lucky sea lion.

How far do you drive when you suspect that you’ve made a wrong turn? Do you base it on time or distance? In other words, are you more likely to say, “Hey, let’s just give it 10 more minutes,” or, “I think it’s just another two miles after this sign?” I tend to go by time. If it seems like driving for 20 minutes without seeing my exit is odd, I’ll assume that I must have missed it. I used to do the distance thing, but then I realized that I lack the proper understanding of spacial relations.

I’m reminded of this internal debate when I look at this photo by Flickr user kanelstrand from a road trip in Iceland. I’m a sucker for “road to nowhere” pictures. I’m also wistful for the pre-GPS days. I liked pulling over, unfolding a giant road map on the hood of my car and trying to figure out where the hell I was. Technology may make life easier and safer, but no one ever said that easy and safe were interesting.

Today’s photo of the day comes from Many Moon Honeymoon who stumbled upon a natural “infinity pool.”

He explains:

Tat Kuang Si waterfall is about 32km outside Luang Prabang in Laos. After taking this photograph, I went for a swim. The edge of the pool, where water spills over the side is heavily overhung, and there is about a 10 metre drop below to the next pool. It has to be the best infinity pool in the world. The water was very refreshing after a hard slog up the hill in the humid weather too!

Carpooling is a great way to get to know your coworkers, save money and help the environment. A common concern amongst people who ride-share is that they hate being cramped in the car. Sure, the lack of legroom and sheer number of elbows poking your torso can make for an aggravating commute. But the next time you want to gripe about how uncomfortable your ride to work is, consider this Indian quartet that was immortalized by Flickr user jrodmanjr. Still think it’s rough packing into Steve from Accounting’s Mini Cooper? By no means are these four intrepid cyclists unique. During my time in India, I saw countless iterations of creative motorcycle mounting. Each time I was floored by the bravery of these seemingly calm (and always helmet-less) commuters.

Some people can see a shot that everyone else would miss. That’s the case with “___j___” who submitted this picture taken in Abiqulu, New Mexico for our Photo of the Day.

I especially like how the drab forward view is ‘enhanced’ with the view from behind. Some could say it’s a symbol of how we view life. Remembering only the good things behind us and not enjoying the present. Or maybe it’s just a cool trick shot by a talented photographer?
