Roamz iPhone App Will Help You Discover Things To Do At Home Or On The Road

If you’ve traveled with any kind of regularity, I’m sure at some point or another you’ve found yourself in a new city with some spare time on your hands but unsure of what you should do. A guidebook can sometimes be of assistance, but they’re often out of date even before they are published, and asking a local can usually yield results, although they routinely view their city much differently than a visitor. What we need in these instances is something that is not only current but also easy to access, providing us with suggestions for activities, good places to eat, interesting local shops and other hotspots. That is exactly what the Roamz app for iPhone and Android aims to do, adding in a nice social twist to the mix.

Roamz is a simple to use, location-sensitive app that has been designed from the ground up to help people discover what is happening around them. The interface is clean and simple, providing a basic search bar that allows us to enter terms like “pizza” or “live music,” with results returned in quick fashion. Your most recent searches are saved so that they can be quickly accessed again, while suggestions for common search terms are displayed as graphical tiles along the bottom of the screen. Tapping one of them displays nearby results for the specific category with some basic information about the restaurant, shop or activity itself. Those results also show the location of the event (which can be opened in the maps app for navigation) and give options to visit the venue’s website or dial its phone number.

If you’ve owned a smartphone over the past couple of years, you’ve probably seen similar apps. But where Roamz sets itself apart is that rather than simply searching a database of local addresses sorted by category it actually scans social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, to determine what places or events are getting the most buzz around you. This means you’re not only receiving info about a great place to eat, but you could also learn about special activities that are taking place near by. This social aspect of the search gives Roamz a more timely quality that isn’t found elsewhere.The app will also allow you to save a list of your favorite locations and it will automatically alert you to special activities at those places whenever you’re in the neighborhood. Those suggestions can come in handy when you’re looking for things to do both at home or on the road. Not surprisingly, Roamz also connects with popular social media outlets, allowing you to share your own activities with friends and family.

That’s the basic premise of this app and in practice it works quite well. I’ve used it to find new places to eat in my hometown, as well as to discover things to do when visiting another city. The social aspects of Romaz offer a nice twist over similar apps, as you get to see what others near you are saying about the hotspots. The app even displays images that have been shared through social media, giving users an opportunity to see the place long before they ever visit it.

The app is completely free and is available on both Apple’s app store and the Google Play store. It is definitely one that will come in handy while in your home city, but it truly struts its stuff while traveling elsewhere.

Yelp Uses Public Shaming To Dissuade Fake Reviews




While social travel review sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor can be helpful for trip planning, one constant criticism is how easily it is for business owners to write or pay for fake reviews of their establishment to boost its rating. In Yelp’s latest effort to discourage this kind of manipulation, they will be publicly shaming these businesses by displaying warning signs to readers (shown above).

The travel site is putting on their detective hats and watching for suspicious activity by business owners. For example, if many reviews are being submitted from the same Internet Protocol (IP) address, this can be an indicator. Once they find these “rogue solicitations,” they warn users. According to Digital Trends, the alert will stay active for 90 days and will be removed after this period, as long as the business quits gaming the system.

“We want to make sure consumers are making informed decisions,” said Eric Singley, Yelp’s VP of Consumer & Mobile Products. “Yelp’s automated review filter is working around the clock to flag these types of biased reviews, and we believe that you deserve the right to know when this type of activity is taking place behind the scenes.”

Although this new idea has only been in place for a couple days, it’s already working. For example, a Texan business owner who had purchased 200 positive online reviews was caught in Yelp’s filter due to its overly “impressive results.”

Mr. Singley notes that, while Yelp does have to be aware of these scams, for the most part their travel community is full of honest business owners.

VIP Perks At Your Favorite Hotels: Want Me Get Me Promises Just That

Let’s just say we like the good life, and new members-only hotel booking site Want Me Get Me, is promising something that seems right up our alley. Launching today, the website promises “perks and amenities usually reserved for celebrities, rock stars, and platinum rewards status priority guests at the world’s best hotels.”

It’s not like a flash sale model – members pay standard “best available” rates – but, in turn, are added on the hotel GM’s VIP List, a room upgrade when available, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Usually, a VIP list is reserved for high-profile guests, but the program with Want Me Get Me ensures that members will enjoy these gratis add-ons. The amenities offered are entirely left to the discretion of each hotel but can include anything from the splurge (champagne upon arrival and cocktails for two) to the more practical (free valet parking and late check-out).

“Want Me Get Me provides a way for these brands to engage an important demographic using social media and technology that is a real first for hotels and encourages loyalty and drives bookings,” said Melanie Brandman, chief curator officer, in a release.

It’s an exciting concept, and the site’s interface is fairly simple to use. Just pick your city (currently New York, Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco are supported), your dates of check-in, and choose up to three “guaranteed perks” to narrow down the room list. On a hypothetical weekend in New York with guaranteed room upgrade, we ended up at The Chatwal, one of our favorite luxury properties.

Want Me Get Me has secured agreements with more than 200 boutique and luxury hotels including properties from Ace Hotel, Baglioni Hotels, Denihan Hospitality Group, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Firmdale Hotels, Gansevoort Hotel Group, Hampshire Hotels & Resorts, Kempinski Hotels, L’Ermitage, Luxe Worldwide Hotels, Montage Hotels & Resorts, Morgans Hotel Group, The NoMad Hotel, Oberoi Hotels & Resorts, Orient-Express Hotels, The Peninsula Hotels, Raffles Hotels and Resorts, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, The Standard, Thompson Hotels, and Trump Hotel Collection.

Want Me Get Me plans to add extra amenities, double the number of hotels on the platform and be available in all major U.S. cities by year’s end.

The bottom line? If our favorite luxury property isn’t available on Jetsetter or Sniqueaway, we’re sure to use this site on an upcoming vacation or business trip.

How Would You Like To Name Thomas Airways’ New Boeing 787 Dreamliner?

For those who have ever dreamed of naming a commercial airplane and having their creativity being broadcast in the sky for all to see, you may want to enter Thomson Airways’ new contest. The airline is reaching out to Twitter users for help naming their brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Britain. Beginning in May 2013, Thomson will become the first British airline to operate the plane.

Using the hashtag #nameourplane for entries, the airline is asking voters to tweet a suggested name for the aircraft, along with their reason for choosing it. Of course, this needs to be done in 140 characters or less. Additionally, if you happen to spot the contest’s signature hashtag-adorned plane (shown right), you should attach a photo to your tweet for “special consideration.”

According to The Age, entries will be judged by a panel that includes Thomson managing director Chris Browne, and the airline’s head of training and 787 test pilot, Captain Stuart Gruber.

“The arrival of the 787 Dreamliner will be an exciting time for Thomson Airways and our customers,” said Miss Browne. “It was only fitting to name one of these revolutionary aircraft in an equally innovative way.”

And the best part? The winner will also receive a free flight on-board their personally-named aircraft.
