Atlanta loses three hotels to weak market, two to become dorms

Three hotels have succumbed to weakness in the Atlanta market. Among the recent casualties is the 502-room Marriott Renaissance. Rates have been pushed lower by an abundance of capacity that has caused even top brands to get stuck charging less than $100 a night. When there’s far more supply than demand, of course, this is what happens.

Joining the Renaissance in the graveyard will be the city’s Wyndam Garden Hotel and Baymont Inn & Suites. Georgia State University will be buying both and converting them to dorms. The future of the Renaissance remains uncertain, though 75 percent of its laid-off staff will be moving to other Marriott properties.

Given the state of the Atlanta hotel market, there’s the risk that more hotels could follow:

“More and more property owners are asking themselves the question, ‘Is operating this facility as a hotel really what produces the maximum economic return?'” Mark Woodworth, president of PKF Hospitality Research, tells the [Atlanta Journal-Constitution].

Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa debuts “World’s Spiciest Drink”

This drink is no joke.

The Fire Pit Bloody Mary is part of the Wyndham’s Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa’s new “Caliente Cocktails” and the Puerto Rico hotel is already staking claim that it’s the spiciest drink in the world.

The Fire Pit Bloody Mary’s key ingredient is the fiery Indian bhut jolokia chile pepper. It boosts a ranking of more than one million Scoville units (the measurement of ‘spicy’ heat) and the pepper has been ranked by Guinness World Records as the world’s hottest.

“If you think you’ve already tasted the hottest Bloody Mary in the world, you’re wrong,” said Danna Holck, general manager of Wyndham Rio Mar. “If you’re man-or woman-enough to drink one, we’ll give you a second Fire Pit on us.” It’s a nice offer, but after you use the fire extinguisher (which comes courtesy of the hotel when you order a drink) to put out the blaze in your mouth, can you really stand another one? For only $10, maybe you’re brave enough…

For those of you not quite ready to taste this spice of life, the “Caliente Cocktails” menu also includes an assortment of $10 drinks including the Volcano (a concoction of brandy, sweet and sour mix and orange juice); Fire Ball (cinnamon schnapps and Tabasco); and the Fire and Ice (rum, grenadine, vodka and blue curacao).

Caliente Cocktails are only available at the hotel’s new fire pit – the inspiration for the new drink menu – which is located at Wyndham Rio Mar’s Tiki Grill overlooking the beach. If you’re brave enough to taste this concoction, let us know how it was (and how you’re feeling).

Ask Gadling: Getting the most (hotel) bang for your buck

We’ve talked a lot about hotel promotions and packages, but how do you choose what’s best for you and your budget? That’s the topic of this week’s question, from Cindy in San Antonio, who wants to book a nice hotel without paying for unwanted amenities.

“I want to go on vacation this year, but I’d also like to get the most bang for my buck. I don’t want to seem greedy, but I want more than just a hotel room and I don’t want to spend money on things I’m not going to take advantage of, like free water sports or spa gift credits. How do I get the most bang for my buck at hotels, without having to compromise my vacation?”

Gadling: Your question isn’t out of the ordinary and certainly isn’t greedy. It’s completely natural for you want to the most for your hard-earned cash, especially when you travel. I’m here to tell you it’s possible to travel in style, without breaking the bank. Here are a few tips before you book:

1. Think outside the box. Just because you’re familiar with some hotel brands doesn’t mean you should exclude others. Many people fall into the “I can’t afford that” or “It’s too basic” frame of mind without even checking out the hotels first. Hotels like Hyatt, Marriott and Wyndham have ‘upscale’ brands that act like resorts and offer different amenities and packages from their flagship hotels. In the same way, luxury hotels like the Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons offer vacation packages that include everything from dinners to spa days to tours, and more. The cost for these add-ons is often less than what you would pay if you priced it out a la carte, and you get the service that luxe hotels are known for. Don’t shy away from boutique brands, either. Hotels like Kimpton’s and Affinia’s are smaller than big name hotels, but they offer the same amenities (sometimes more) and host special ‘theme’ packages depending on the time of year you travel and what you’re looking for, including family packages, girlfriend getaways and city tours.

2. Use loyalty points. If you’re a member of a hotel’s loyalty program, look to them first before booking. Hotels will cater to their loyalty members, even if you don’t have enough points for a free night. Just having a membership goes a long way these days (and the memberships are free!). If you’re not a member of any hotel loyalty programs, check with your credit card company or airline rewards programs. Credit card companies offer great travel deals that allow you to gain points when you book through them, and they also have promotions that are specific to them so you might find something that suits your tastes and isn’t offered on the hotel’s websites. The same logic applies to airline miles programs – airlines and hotels have teamed up to offer packages that include airfare and hotel stays, so it’s likely you can save money and stay at some great properties.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. If you find a hotel and package price that’s perfect, but the package offerings aren’t quite right, call their customer service line and ask for some re-shuffling. Tell the agent exactly what you like and don’t like about a package, and ask if they can accommodate you with another package for the same price, or throw in a few of the things you’re seeking. Many times, the hotel will sell you the package with all the inclusions, and give you the extras you’re seeking for free. Valet service or free parking, free WiFi, additional beds (which often come with a charge) and credits in either the restaurant, bar or spa are common requests that hotel’s often accommodate. Remember, this is the hospitality business – their job is to cater to the customer, so ask for what you want and you’ll be surprised at what you get!

Enjoy your vacation, Cindy, and remember: you work hard for your money, so make it work for you!

7 day vacation rentals for $199 through Wyndham Worldwide

Looking to vacation on a budget? Wyndham Worldwide has some hot deals on 7-day vacation rentals for just $199. The availability is obviously limited, and there is a bit of fine print involved, but I was able to find several properties for the advertised price.

To clarify – the $199 price is for 7 days – and since many hotels retail for the same price for just one night, you’ll understand why this is a real bargain. There are even several properties in the Orlando area, though given their high demand, you’ll be paying $399 for a 2 bedroom for the 7 day period.

Vacation rentals are perfect for families – because they come with their own kitchen, and most properties have a decent assortment of on-site amenities. So – browse through their properties and see whether you can find yourself a hot $199 deal on your own vacation rental for the week. The locations, promotion details and rules can be found here.

New Wyndham hotel opens in Miami’s South Beach

Wyndham Hotels and Resorts is continuing its Florida hotel expansion with the opening of a new 133-room-and-suite Wyndham Garden Hotel Miami South Beach. The new hotel, located at 1050 Washington Avenue in South Beach’s entertainment district, sits two blocks from the beach and is a short drive from Miami’s International Airport and the Port of Miami.

The hotel sits on the site of the historic 1922 Coral House, which was preserved by the Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board and recently underwent a $5.5 million renovation before joining the Wyndham family. On the grounds is Catch 10 Seafood Bistro, which offers outdoor seating, room service and poolside dining, as well as Starbucks coffee and the hotel’s signature mint lemonade.

The Wyndham Garden Hotel Miami South Beach offers the typical Wyndham amenities: BeWell bedding, room service, concierge services, valet parking and free high-speed wireless Internet access. In addition, each guest room and suite offers large work desks and ergonomic chairs, as well as marble counter-tops, white lacquered vanities with vessel sinks and spa teak benches in all showers. The Wyndham South Beach property has lush gardens surrounding an outdoor pool and a state-of-the-art 24-hour fitness facility.

The hotel is across the street from the Wolfsonian Museum, a short walk to the Lincoln Road Mall and the Versace Mansion (now the Villa by Barton G) on Ocean Drive.
