Brainy Holidays

If
you’re the type who likes to take your brain on vacation with you and actually use it, then spare a moment to
consider some of the following “research holidays.”  Built around the dual themes of learning and
research, these vacations combine the challenge of learning with the adventure of travel.

Mark MacKenzie of The Independent does a nice job summarizing a few of the better options
that are available for those of you with Indiana Jones aspirations.  For more detailed information, check out the
article here.

Shangri La River Expeditions – Jump in a kayak or
raft and help geoscientists map out river tributaries in western China.  No prior geoscience experience necessary.

South Africa’s Kuruman River Reserve – Work with the Earthwatch
Institute to monitor Meerkat breeding.  No prior meerkat breeding experience necessary.  Earthwatch also has
141 other projects to choose from if meerkats don’t float your boat.

Hawaiian Volcanos – Aspiring vulcanologists can travel to Hawaii to
measure volcanic activity with the United States Geological Survey (USGS).  Don’t expect to spend much time
kicking it on the beach, however.  “Volunteers must be in top physical shape.”  This means lots
of trekking around with heavy research equipment.  Brain and brawn required on this one.

Antarctica – The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has a variety of
volunteer positions available that ranging from cooking for the scientists to being a molecular phylogeneticist.
Go now and experience Antarctica before it melts.

World Citizens Guide

The motto of this
new group should be Be Not Thee an Ugly American. And good for them for saying so. Yes, at a time when we
really, truly need to project the very best image we can overseas, it seems many folks are still heading abroad and
wondering out loud why it is these other durn counties don’t take American dollars. Oh, please.

And so
comes the "World Citizens Guide" published by
Business for Diplomatic Action Inc. The guide offers 16 tips to behave properly when overseas. Among the tips:

  • Try to speak a little of a foreign language and respect local customs. (well, duh)
  • Be safety conscious not fearful (OK, that’s cool)
  • Dress for respect (can’t tell you how many
dreadlocked, stinky hippie college kids I’ve seen in places like Thailand…clean up your act people!)

Anyway, a good, informative list and you
gotta give some props out to the folks that put this lsit together. Now if we can only get people to download and read
the thing.

Go Before They’re Gone

This month’s Men’s Journal features an article whose theme is horribly depressing; phenomenal travel destinations that will soon disappear.

For those of you who don’t believe in Global Warming, you may want to click over to some feel-good fantasy site because the following may upset the balance of the perfect little fictitious world you’ve created for yourself.

For the remaining intelligent souls among us, I’d like to remind you that man’s encroachment on nature takes many forms and each, in its own insidious way, is affecting everything around us. The Men’s Journal article details a handful of what we may be losing in the near future and when these tragedies are expected to occur. I’ve only included three in this post. For the complete list, check out a copy of the May edition of Men’s Journal-sorry, but it is not online.

Mont Blanc, France – Warming temperatures are expected to melt most of the mountain’s glaciers by 2035.

Three Gorges, China – The massive demand for energy has resulted in the construction of the world’s largest dam. By 2009, the area’s incredible landscape and archeological relics will be under 350 feet of water.

Maldives, Indian Ocean – Low-lying island nations such as the Maldives, which are only three feet above sea level, are expected to disappear by 2100 due to rising waters brought on by global warming.

Eagle Hatches on Santa Cruz

Man, it seems like Santa Cruz Island
is in the news all the time these days. It’s not like I have a Google alert sending me info about the island, I just
keep finding stories about it. Remember, Santa Cruz is one of several islands that make up the Channel Islands off the
coast of California, about 20 miles from Ventura, and I’ve posted about them several times before
because, well, they’re a great place to go and hang out on a lazy California weekend, and b) the paddling around Santa
Cruz itself is superb. The sea caves there offer one of the best paddling experiences around.

But there is
also some great wildlife there. First, there are feral pigs. Not as many as there used to be
because they just recently hunted many of them down to thin the population, but you know a few hearty souls are still
lurking in the bushes. There are seals and porpoises. And, as of recently, there are eaglets. Yes, according to this story, a pair of bald eagles
hatched a chick on Santa Cruz on Wednesday for the first time in more than 50 years. Biologists say that the last known
successful nesting of a bald eagle on the Channel Islands was in 1949 on Anacapa Island. As most people know  this
is a big deal because the widespread use of DDT almost wiped the birds off the California coast in the 60s. So this is
good news and very cool.

Free Travel for Pretend Girlfriend

I’ve done the majority of my traveling on my own.  There is a certain sense of freedom to
be able to go anywhere you want and not have to worry about a travel partner hating a particular city, restaurant, or
museum.  But, let’s face it; there are a lot more benefits to actually traveling with someone.

My personal reason for traveling solo is usually because no one wants to go to the strange places I normally pick
for my vacations (Siberia, anyone?).  There are others, however, who travel solo for a very different reason; no
one wants to travel with them regardless of where they go.

I recently came across a very
sad article
in a San Diego newspaper about Dale Porter, a 43-year-old divorcee who sadly admitted he hadn’t
kissed a woman in over two years.  While this is disturbing enough, the thought of going on vacation solo was
apparently so unnerving he has posted an ad on Craigslist searching for a
“pretend girlfriend” to accompany him.  The poor guy is so down in the dumps he isn’t even
trying to find a real girlfriend, just one that will occasionally hold his hand on the beach and do the things that
girlfriends do but without the emotion or sex.  In return, Mr. Porter will pay all expenses, as well as a daily
fee for services rendered.  This certainly sounds like a lame pick-up scam, but he insists his intentions are
truly honorable.  And, enough people believe him that more than 30 women have already contacted the lonely
traveler.

Hmm… I’m not sure what to think about this one.  Kudos for trying, but as
his friend says in the article, “Dale just needs to get out a little more.”  That’s the
truth.  Take my advice and travel solo, man!  Because, when American girls won’t give you the time of
day, occasionally foreign ones will.
