Daily deal – Dash Express connected GPS unit – $199.99

by Scott Carmichael on

My daily deal for today is for the Dash Express connected GPS device. This GPS unit is different than any other unit I’ve ever mentioned here on Gadling.

Inside the Dash Express is essentially a mobile phone, and with this, you are always connected to the Internet (as long as you are within coverage).

By being connected, the Dash Express constantly receives updates about traffic on your route. It receives this information from a variety of sources, including fellow Dash Express users. This feature makes the Dash Express the only GPS unit on the market that can report traffic on ALL roads, not just the major highways.

In addition to traffic information, the Dash Express also offers an online address search feature (through Yahoo), plus you can send an address from your computer directly to your car (Imagine not having to write down addresses before you leave!). The unit also has access to real-time local gas prices and movie times. To make the connected services even better, you can add “Dash Apps”, which are user submitted online searches. Dash Apps add powerful features to the Dash Express like speedtrap reports, local weather, and even local online Wikipedia searches.

In addition to the connected services, you also get text-to-speech for spoken commands, 3D map views, a theft deterrent option and an automatic day/night screen setting.

The Dash Express even allows you to “phone in” your destination with TellMe or 1-800-DIRECTIONS and have the address sent directly to the device!

The Dash express launched earlier this year for $399, but for just one day you’ll be able to pick one up for just $199.99.

There is of course one minor caveat; you will need a monthly subscription in order to use the online features. Subscribing is optional, but without the connected Dash services, the device is just another GPS unit. Subscriptions start a $12.99, and drop to $9.99 when you pre-pay for 2 years.

The Dash Express is on sale at Amazon.com, and ships for free.

Daily deal – Amazon Kindle wireless reading device $50 off

by Scott Carmichael on

My daily deal for today comes courtesy of Oprah Winfrey! On Friday, Oprah announced that her newest favorite gadget is the Amazon Kindle. The Kindle came out almost a year ago, and is an electronic book reader with wireless access.

What this means to us travelers is that when you are stuck at the airport, you can wirelessly browse Amazon.com and order books directly to the device. The screen uses E-Ink technology, which looks a lot like regular paper, and is very easy on the eyes.

The Kindle usually retails for $359, but if you use coupon code “OPRAHWINFREY” at checkout, you’ll get an additional $50 off. The deal is only valid till November 1st.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Kindle will not be able to access wireless downloads outside the USA, the network only operates within the Sprint coverage area. If you are abroad, you can still purchase books using a computer, and you’ll be able to transfer them using a USB cable.

I managed to get my Kindle the day they were released, and it’s been a very impressive little device. No longer do I have to rush into the local airport book store to buy a book for my flight, and in addition to books, I’m also able to keep up with news and other publications like Time and Forbes. The Amazon Kindle even has a built in MP3 player for adding some background music to your book!

You can read more about the Amazon Kindle here.

Daily deal – SeV TEC Shirt $30 discount

by Scott Carmichael on

My daily deal for this sunny but chilly Sunday is another top notch travel garment from SeV. Their TEC shirt has 8 pockets, including a secure pocket for your travel documents, pockets for your iPod and mobile phone and even a special pen pocket. Of course, all these pockets make this the perfect shirt for traveling in.

The shirt is made of breathable lightweight poly/rayon and is machine washable.

The TEC shirt usually retails for $80, but if you order between now and midnight tomorrow (Monday the 27th), you’ll get a nice $30 discount, making the shirt just $50. The deal is not valid on small and XXXL Khaki shirts, or XXXL Charcoal Gray shirts.

All products from SeV ship for just $5 and you’ll find more information about this fantastic shirt on the SeV site.

While you are browsing their collection, why not take a moment and watch this hilarious video clip featuring Steve Wozniak wearing an SeV jacket and holding a light saber… Steve is a member of the board of advisors of SeV, and someone I worshiped as a kid (Steve Wozniak is one of the founders of Apple, along with his friend Steve Jobs).

Daily deal – HP Mini-Note 2133 ultra portable notebook for $299

by Scott Carmichael on

My daily deal for today is for the HP Mini-Note 2133 “Netbook”. This ultra portable computer was featured in one of my reviews back in August where it got my 2 thumbs up. The version on sale today has pretty lightweight specifications, but still offers the same great screen and keyboard of the review model.

The HP Mini-Note 2133 has a 1.0GHz VIA C7 processor, 512MB of memory, a 4GB SSD drive and comes with Linux. It is priced at a very reasonable $299. There are other netbooks out there with similar specifications at the same price, but none of them come with the large high resolution screen and full size keyboard of the Mini-Note 2133.

The machine is on sale at Amazon.com, which of course means free shipping and no sale tax for many buyers.

If you really dislike Linux, and want a machine with a little more “oomph”, then check out the Mini-Note one step above the machine on sale today. It comes with a 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of ram and a 120GB harddrive for $404.

Daily deal – 3 piece luggage set for $28

by Scott Carmichael on

My daily deal for today is for the “Fiji” 3 piece luggage set, currently on sale at Sears.com.

The set consists of a 24″ upright roller, a 19″ upright roller and a carry-on tote bag. The bags are made of 600 count denim polyester, and the item description claims they are “expandable”.

If you have a Sears store in your area with the item in stock then you can order online for an in-store pickup to save on shipping. If you’d rather save the gas and just have Sears ship it to you you’ll have to pay about $12 for ground shipping.

The item description says the bags are “value”, which usually means they are of lesser quality than most bag sets, but at $28 you really can’t complain. The three bags should be spacious enough for a 2 person trip for a couple of days.
