Gadling Time Machine: Ireland

With St. Patrick’s day tomorrow, I thought I might travel back in time and see what we’ve written in the past about Ireland, the Irish, Guinness, and everything else St. Patty’s Day related. Here’s what I dug up:

Don’t get pinched tomorrow.

What Are the Best Irish Drinking Songs?

St. Patrick’s day is right around the corner. On Saturday morning I’ll be heading to Kansas City for the big party in Westport, where I’ll imbibe on some tasty green beers at Kelly’s, no doubt. I’m not Irish, but that won’t stop me from pickling my liver like the best of them. In order to not look like a fool when the songs are sung and jigs are danced, I found this Ask Metafilter question looking for the best Irish drinking songs so I can practice before I leave. The community came up with a TON to choose from, but this one is my favorite, short and sweet:

They come over here
And they take all our land
They chop off our heads
And they boil them in oil
Our children are leaving
And we have no heads
We drink and we sing
And we drink and we die

Ireland Best at Binge-Drinking

Ouch! Just a few days before celebrates Saint Patrick’s Day, the EU has announced the results of a survey exploring attitudes to alcohol in the EU.

Here are the top six binge-drinking (drinks five or more drinks in one session) countries:

  • Ireland 34%
  • Finland 27%
  • UK 24%
  • Denmark 23%
  • Portugal 4%
  • Italy & Greece 2%

Surprisingly, no Eastern European countries scored high. Probably because binge-drinking is different from keeping oneself moderately drunk at all times?

Round Ireland with a Fridge by Tony Hawks

With St. Patrick’s day coming up this weekend, I thought I’d share my all-time favorite travel book about Ireland: Tony Hawks‘s (no, not the skateboarder) “Round Ireland with a Fridge.”

While traveling in Ireland, British comedian/musician Tony Hawks noticed a peculiar hitchhiker standing on the side of the road — one with a refrigerator in tow — and he wonders who on Earth would pick up a hitchhiker with a fridge? Years later on a drunken night with a friend, a bet was made: could Tony hitchhike his way around Ireland with a fridge? “Ireland surely is the only place in the world where you could get one hundred percent approval for doing something so daft,” Tony says in his website’s FAQ.

The book follows him and his fridge as they make their way around Ireland, thumbs out, hitching rides from unsuspecting and completely hospitable Irish folks. It’s hilarious!

What’s your favorite book about Ireland? Let me know, and come St. Patty’s Day, I’ll do a round-up.

Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day – Yes You Can!

There really is only one place to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. It’s not Boston, New York, or some local neighborhood bar serving green beer; it’s Ireland itself.

I was fortunate enough to be on the emerald isle to enjoy this holiday a number of years ago. I was unfortunate, however, to be working in a pub at the time. Wow. This is one national holiday where the locals really know how to celebrate. My only job the whole day, from 9 a.m. to well after midnight was simply bringing back empty glasses to the bar. It would take me ten minutes to squeeze through the mass of inebriated Irish, stack as many empties as I could, then fight my way back. I’ve never seen a bar so packed in my life. Fire Marshals are practically non-existent and had any problems occurred, it would have been mass carnage.

If this sounds like something you simply can’t miss, it’s not too late to fly on over and partake in a bit of the festivities yourself. The New York Times floated this suggestion last Sunday and I’m sure it sparked some excitement, especially considering that St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday this year. If you live on the east coast of America (or Europe for that matter) you can easily jet out Friday after work and then fly home Sunday. It will be a weekend getaway you’ll likely never forget.
