Dive Photo Book Recommendation

Cathy Church’s writes some great books on
scuba diving. Her how-to books and the numerous articles she’s published over the years in Skin Diver, have
made her one of the top folks in underwater photography.

So if you are a fan of the undersea photographic world, you ought to check out her book
My Underwater Photo
Journey
. The book really shows off her artistry and keen eye. There’s also a
great online site that you can explore to get more information, tips, etc.
This would make a great coffee table book, and also a great gift for your favorite diving amigo.

Djibouti Day

Remember how it was cool to create a theme day because you felt like it? Like National Go See A Movie Day, National Pull Your Sister’s Hair Day (my brother’s all time fav), National Go Kick Rocks Day, or National Hang Ten Day. I’m sure you get the picture. Well today seems like a great day to create a day and I’m requesting a Learn About Djibouti Day.

This African country sits between Eritrea and Somalia and is slightly smaller than Massachusetts. Djiboutians have an average life expectancy of 43 years and will spend those years speaking French and/or Arabic, the two official languages of the country. Though the country doesn’t see tourists too often when times are relaxed from strife, adventure seekers will find the black lava fields, endless plains and strange natural chimney’s interesting sites. Divers will have a blast checking out the coral reefs in the Red Sea.

You can start learning more about Djibouti by visiting the CIA World Factbook and then stroll through Lonely Planet Online.

Eco Fun for Divers and Land Lubbers Alike

MSNBC has a great story up right now from Sport Diver magazine about 10 amazing “eco wonderlands” which will excite divers and land lubbers alike. Their top choices include the waters and wilds of Dominica, Tobago, Belize, the “Maya Riviera” and good old American Maui. There’s also the usual suggestions on “must dos” and interesting lodging.

Turn that Reef Down!

Or so might go the cries of certain fish who find the noise on a particular reef not to their liking. In the
New York Times today there is an article about the
way that fish tune in to the sound of a reef, deciding whether it is to their liking if, say, lots of noise shrimp are
around…some of whom love Led Zepplin, I understand.

It also has potential as a kind of pied piper effect if they can use sounds to lure fish to artificial reefs. It’s
pretty interesting stuff. Willy posted about it over
at divester, too, but I thought it was
interesting enough to post here as well.

Ivana’s Little Dive

Well, roughing it this ain’t, but I had to post about it just because it’s absurd and because it’s a story about one
of the places in the world I most want to visit. Ivana
Trumpalot
has built an exclusive…and I mean this in the real sense of the word…resort in Queensland, Australia
which is, and I quote: “available only to a privleged few”.  The luxury condos are aimed at an elite market
promising an invitation-only client list and that the complex will be “paparazzi-free.” Yeah, right.
