Liverpool Uses Robots to Get Tough on Pigeons

I lived in Liverpool for a little over three years, and despite it’s reputation for being a dreary, post-industrial wasteland where you’re likely to get mugged, the city is a wonderful place — full of nightlife, beautiful architecture, and great people.

Unfortunately, it’s also full of pigeons. Pigeons that get fat and won’t leave because they’re fed by the public. Pigeons that pooped on me. Fortunately, the problem that has undoubtedly kept tourists from the city for years, is finally being addressed.

Introducing the robotic bird of prey.

These imitation falcons will be stationed in the center of town, perched atop different buildings. Not only do the robots look like a pigeon’s natural predator, but they can also squawk and flap their wings to scare off the wing-ed nuisance.

Beyond its unsightly residue, pigeon poop is a serious problem in Liverpool. It makes surfaces slicker, and costs over £160,000 (over $300,000) to clean. That’s money that could be spent on more important problems (like stopping people from getting mugged, for instance).

In all seriousness, now is the time to plan your Spring trip to Liverpool. When the sun finally comes out in mid-May, the town comes to life — street cafes, friendly faces, and cute cobblestone streets to explore. You’re a quick ferry ride from Ireland, and a short train journey from the English countryside, which, because of all the rain, is breathtakingly lush.

Plus, now, thanks to the robots, your trip will be bird-poop free!

The Shortest Street in the World

A street in Caithness, Scotland has been recently named the shortest street in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records, says the BBC.

Ebenezer Place measures just 6 feet 9 inches, and has only 1 address: a door to No. 1 Bistro, a restaraunt in Mackays Hotel. It was built in 1884.

The longest road in the world is the Pan-American Highway which stretches 29,800 miles from Fairbanks, Alaska to the lower reaches of South America.

We’ve also got the crookedest street in the world, the highest, and the lowest. What’s missing?

Volvo: Best for Passion

I don’t really know why research like this is conducted, but nonetheless I am pleased to announce what soccer moms nationwide have probably known for years: Volvo Estate is the best car to have sex in. Apparently, the ‘passion wagon’ has lived through more back seat action than any other vehicle. Boxy, safe and “convenient for the family.” Who knew?

TOP 10 ‘PASSION WAGONS’, as voted in the UK:

1. Volvo Estate

2. Mercedes Benz Sprinter Van

3. VW Camper Van

4. BMW 3 Series Saloon

5. Ford Escort

6. Audi TT

7. Land Rover Discovery

8. Porsche Carrera

9. VW Golf

10. Ford Focus

While we blogged about Russian drivers admitting to regularly having sex while driving, this poll revealed that 68 percent of Brits admitted to having sex in the car, 10 percent while driving. Man, gotta watch for those soccer ( or is it “football”) moms.

What’s the Best Pulpit Pun?

I’m more or less a city boy, so when I take a cross country drive, I’m endlessly amused by the needlessly intense religious messages shouted down at me from billboards on old country roads. “You a sinner! Repent now!” Or, even more blunt, “Follow Jesus or Burn In Hell.”

These sentence-long sermons can border on frightening, but along the way I’ve also come across some hysterical church signage — clever messages aimed to grab the attention of passersby (and, presumably, get their backsides in the pews). Messages like “Chxxch — have you guessed what’s missing.UR!” are often the highlight of a long, lonely drive.

And now, thanks to Margaret Slater and her employer, Congregational & General Insurance, these puns are being collected in as part of a contest. They’re looking for the best religious slogan out there, and they’re giving the winner £500.

Says Slater, “Some of the puns really make you smile and we’ve seen some great examples of creative copywriting.”

Some other great examples she notes are: “Come in for a free faith lift,” “Fight truth decay,” and the World Cup-themed “Rooney shoots but Jesus saves.”

Seen any good ones, recently?

When You Can’t Travel to the Food, Have the Food Travel to You!

Kanye West brought a whole new meaning to the “curry run” recently. Apparently, when he found Manhattan’s culinary choices a little too confining, he was tipped off–by fellow rap star Snoop Dogg–to the world’s best curry take-out: the British Raj, near Newport, Wales.

Masud Ahmed, the restaurant’s owner, didn’t know who Kanye was, when the faxed order came in. But, he was happy to have his head chef fulfill the 3000-mile delivery order. The special eight-dish meal ended up costing Kanye over $3800 USD for the restaurant bill alone, plus the costs of transporting the chef and the temperature-controlled dry ice containers to Heathrow by helicopter, then business class to NYC, then limousined to the party (transport costs paid by the record company).

The chef gets his first trip to the States, and Kanye’s guests get curry in a hurry, relatively. Maybe next time, he’ll just go to the restaurant in person.

Oh, and, by the way, no need to call up Snoop for the 4-1-1; we got you covered. Here’s the restaurant’s contact info: The British Raj Lounge Bar, 68 Tregwilym Rd., Rogerstone, Wales, NP10 9EJ, telephone: +44-01633-892-377.
