Blueeyes Magazine

I urge you to check out the newest issue of a new magazine called Blueeyes that might become your newest bookmarked photo/essay site.

I just stumbled upon it while cruising through Coudal.com, and found it to be lusciously illustrated with photos, in addition to being rather charming and quirky. They say that the issues are kind of defined as they go along, with emerging themes that come together as the magazine is produced.

This issue takes you on a tour of African-American Chicago as well as Romania, and there is a wonderful collection of photographs from freelance photographer Michael Brown. It looks like they take submissions, so any budding shutterbugs out there might send them some samples and see if you can get your work published.

Word for the Travel Wise (07/24/06)

The best thing about traveling sometimes is the return home after you’ve made incredible lifelong friends across the globe. From time to time they’ll only be other backpackers exploring the same terrain, but if you’ve made a good effort to meet more locals than tourists you’ll always have a connection, contact and place to go back to on your return one day. Such is the case with one of my dear old pals in Romania who I try to touch base with whenever I have a free moment. With that being said I’m off for the night and to shoot her an email! La reverede.

Word for the Travel Wise (07/10/06)

In my younger years I wasn’t the type of gal easily wooed by a bouquet of beautiful flowers. I always thought, why chop something from it’s roots to tickle my fancy and brighten my home for a short amount of time. Don’t get me wrong, flowers are nice and I’ll kindly accept them as a gift, but it’s not really my sort of thing. However, I can spend hours on end in fields of colorful blooms and blossoms where they are probably happiest. Anyhow, to tie this in with our word of the day or at least the country of choice I picked Bulgaria because of its Valley of the Roses tourist site. According to their tourism bureau going to Bulgaria and not seeing the Valley of the Roses is like going to Egypt and not witnessing the pyramids. In other words it’s a big no-no.

Today’s word is a Bulgarian word used in Bulgaria:

mózhé bí – maybe

The Bulgarian lang falls into the Southern branch of Slavic languages and is closely related to Macedonian. It is the official lingo of Bulgaria and can also be heard in parts of Greece, Turkey, Romania, and Serbia to name only a few. To continue learning Bulgarian online head to BBC for the QuickFix with audio for the most common travelers phrases. EasyBulgarian online offers guides and nine lessons that help beginners learn the alphabet, correct pronunciation in addition to dialog from native Bulgarian speakers. Find a Bulgarian pal online to help with conversation at My language Exchange or pick up an Eastern European LP phrasebook for the road.

Photo of the Day (6/29/06)

I was quite taken by this shot of a snowy lane in Sighisoara, Romania.  Part Tim Burton, part fairy tale, and part old world Europe, Irish Guy has adroitly captured the amazing capacity snow has for transforming the ramshackled into the magical.

Before you proceed to find out what the word of today is I suggest you check out this photo on the Romanian tourism site. For some strange reason it blew me away. The brightly painted yellow colors from the trains railing to the young, smiling Romanian children seated up front makes for one of the best tourism shots I’ve ever seen. If I had the time and money to take off on the steam railway at Viseu du Sus I would do it in a heartbeat. The railway starts from a small logging town, runs through a roadless valley and is considered one of Romania’s finest heritage attractions. I provide no justice to even touching on the site, so please do yourself a favor and add this to your itinerary if headed to Eastern Europe.
