Deal – Tumi summer sale – luggage up to 50% off

My deal of the day for today is another luggage clearance. Tumi make some of the worlds best luggage (in my personal opinion) but their prices are often on “the high side”.

There are 2 kinds of traveler: people who like $400 luggage, and people who laugh at people with $400 luggage. Either way, it’s a personal choice, but if you are a frequent flier, you’ll learn to appreciate high quality luggage. I’ve been using Tumi bags for years, and my 9 year old rolling bag still looks new, despite being dragged around the world multiple times.

The Tumi summer sale has a large assortment of Tumi products with discounts up to 50%. There are some very nice rollers and duffel bags, as well as some overpriced accessories ($150 pen anyone?).

Some of the highlights of the summer sale include a 24″ wheeled packing case for $229 (was $345, pictured on the right) and this 20″ wheeled case for $179 (was $275).

There is something for everyone, including this classy Baker wheeled suitcase for a very “reasonable” $1199 (was just $1595).

Almost all Tumi luggage comes with their comprehensive 5 year warranty, which includes an accident protection warranty during the first year.

The sale runs till July 31st and can be found here.

TSA-friendly wine bag

Everyone always asks me to bring wine from Spain which I’ve stopped doing since a bottle once cracked and left a unique and lovely red design on my new cream colored corduroy pants. Also, wrapping them is a headache: bubble-wrap, then paper, then wrapping paper, then a T-shirt, and you still need to keep your fingers crossed that you will have the bottle in one piece; and they are so heavy to carry in hand luggage!

Well, Bottlewise seems to have found a solution with their TSA-friendly wine bags. Each Bottlewise Duo (US$48.95) bag holds two bottles in well-padded, removable zipper bags, and can fit easily in your check-in luggage. This also means that you don’t have to buy your wine at Duty Free anymore, you can buy exactly what you want, gift-wrap it the way you want, and not worry about lugging it around in your hand-luggage. If you are still worried about cracks, you can opt for the Bottlewise Duo Plus (US$58.95), which comes with more padding.

Amsterdam’s Handbag Museum

So many women out there are crazy about shoes but while I appreciate a good set of pumps, I’m more into cute handbags than shoes. If you agree with me, you might want to consider a trip to Amsterdam and a stop over at the new Amsterdam Tassen Museum, which proudly features over 3,500 bags, purses and suit cases from the last, oh, 400 years or so. Located in a sophisticated canal-side building, a visit to the museum is sure to leave you feeling not-so-chic in your wrinkled travel garb. Your backpack probably won’t feel as luxurious anymore either.

No doubt there’s bound to be some interesting ones in there. Like? How about this one, which appears to hold about 7 coins. Or this interesting leather piece from the 16th century. And there’s this one from Botswana. There’s even some for sale.

Set Your Luggage Apart with Paint

I’m one of those snotty, one-bag types that talks bad about travelers who pack their belongings into a checked suitcase. As I quickly and efficiently bounce through the terminal — backpack secured tightly to my back — I roll my eyes and shake my head at the site of those poor souls who couldn’t live without having three outfits for each day of their week-long trip. Nonsense! To smell while traveling is natural; a change of clothes — a shower, even — is overrated.

However, If you do have to check your luggage, sister site DIY Life pointed us to an article from Baxter Bulletin on a creative way to decorate your checked bag as to distinguish it from the others on the luggage carousel: paint it!

I recall seeing some pretty wacky luggage in my travels. One westerner’s suitcase I spotted in India had swastikas all over it, which may have been perfectly fine in India, but could certainly cause problems with the uninformed in the western world.

Despite What You May Have Thought Previously, The TravelSafe Does Not Suck

I learned about PacSafe’s TravelSafe a few weeks ago. Thinking it looked like a glorified fanny pack, I moved on. Yesterday, however, the folks at Backpackers reviewed the TravelSafe, and they concluded it was both “pretty simple” and “very handy.” I think I may have been wrong.

Featuring a slashproof skin and a high-tensile stainless steel cable with a padlock that cinches tight, the TravelSafe can be locked to pretty much anything.

Capable of holding two medium-sized travel books, a passport, a plane ticket, an entire travel wallet with money and documents, an iPod, a cellphone and a digital camera, the rugged little bag still had room to spare.

Frankly, I’m pretty impressed with the TravelSafe, and now I’m seriously considering getting my own $40 pouch. For the curious, PacSafe makes a number of secure travel items, from a laptop case to a day bag.
